This isn't HamIsland's private playground, this is a long established IRC channel with a certain flow..

-If you want to connect, you should stick around more than 30 seconds, people will actually talk. Believe it or not, people aren't staring at their IRC window 24/7...
-The inside jokes don't play. No one understands who the hell Rudy or other 'characters' are..
-Establish yourself, get to know the group.. this won't happen by having a different nickname every time you join.

Also..The 'Rudy' you've seen coming and going is not who you think it is and doesn't understand why people are mocking him..

It's a little hard to get to know people when you don't know who they are and if they don't say anything. The person "molo" has jumped in with random comments a few times, but I have no clue who that person is. I think the cloak of invisibility thing has always bothered me a little, just like here, where you need a call to sign on. It's especially annoying (it hasn't happened there, btw) when some bonehead like PopTart comes on and gets all pompous. If I don't at least have a general idea who someone is and someone starts pulling that stuff, I'm gone.

The early days of the zed were like that when they had anonymous IDs. I remember one guy who claimed to live in the same town I did at the time constantly PM'ing me about protocol and my complaints about the Santa Rosa Junior College police, a bunch of petty little wannabes, btw, who would give out tickets for 26 mph in the 25 mph zone. Anyway, this guy wouldn't give his call or any other details like he was on some kind of secret mission. I knew he was local because of some of the references he made, so that part was established. I just didn't feel it was right for some anonymous bozo to lecture me about anything if he didn't have the courtesy to give out his own callsign.

I guess I'm just used to the ham radio thing where you at least have some idea approx. where someone is etc. Also, the times I've signed on, I haven't seen any independent activity other than from this crowd. With the list on the right hand side of the screen, it appears that some of these people are signed in 24/7. How do you tell if they are actually on, or can you? Is the IRC just a giant tape recorder, whose thread streams can be accessed later?

Heh, when Sarah saw me using IRC she got a big laugh. Said the last time she'd been on IRC was 1992. Boy, am I behind the curve!

Janet, I wasn't really speaking about you -- I was just commenting on some of the activity I've seen in general. None of it is all that bad, just felt like I needed to say something based on the feedback I was getting.

There's no way to know for sure if someone is at their computer or not. Most of the regulars you see stay logged in 24/7 and can scroll back to see what they missed.

As for the anonymity, I assure you anyone on there will gladly tell you their callsign if you ask. Molo is a member of the forum, in fact. And I can vouch for everyone else.

I need to stay logged in more often. I used to hang out on IRC constantly, even "ran" a few "channels". It's kind of like DX, but open all the time.

Similar to what I do on the forum, I was prone to visual/pictorial outbursts of ANSI art, and sound/music files. Most folks use a proportional font, and the ANSI art loses alignment. Oh well. But that was a lot of fun to do. The client software (and others I have tried) sometimes introduces a large lag that makes my PowerSDR software freeze.

Need another PC in the shack just for webbiness. Have several older ones, it's hard to find the time when working 55+ hours a week.

Hi. I usually don't bridge these two identifiers, but #a_r is my exception. IRC can be pretty wild-west-ish. In the '90s people use to be 'irc warriors' and DoS attack clients or servers in order to take over channels and such. As a result, efnet generally is filled by people using some kind of alias. And they can take protective measures to make sure that others don't know their network of origin.

David.....the people who's nick's you see listed in the list have a client open in the IRC chatroom.Years ago when I was a regular using IRC it was explained to me it was a method to keep control of a chatroom name or maintain your exclusive nickname as it's known that as the last person leaves the chatroom, the chat name and and even your nickname is available to anyone else who wishes to use it...... the trend was to keep rooms open continously and to keep nicks and Administrative control over your room by open IRC clients 24/7...... I thought Jeff exlplained it very well that they were not "deadwood" but people who have choosen to keep their IRC clients open in that chatroom.

It's amazing what information comes back to you when you start doing a particular activity on the computer.It's been 8 years since I've used an IRC chat or the MIRC client.
