That's too bad it has gone that way. Events like that used to be the way neighbors and friends got together, and let the kids run wild having fun. And it doesn't cost much, either. Maybe that's why most people have no idea who their neighbors are any more.

Hell, no, I don't mind—the Vatican picks it up. Besides, compared with the monthly bill for the "sacrificial" wine, the tab here is insignificant. And living in Iceland, he needs regular doses of ethanol-based antifreeze.

I worked with a young lady that managed both flying lessons and photography. She did large format aerial photography of commercial buildings under construction to document progress and such for the owners. She always had several clients and took weekly progress photos for them. While she was at it, she also took flying lessons and ended up paying for and obtaining her license.

Perhaps it was the makeup, the hair styles, the fashion, or a combo of all the above and more but I think most women looked so much hotter back in the old day's, particularly in the 1940's and 50's , than they do today. This is not meant in any way , shape, or form as a put down, there are plenty of extremely good looking women around today. But to me there was something about the look of the old days (fashions, syles, etc.) of the past that strikes me as totally hot. Maybe I was born too late or something. Who knows Anyway, now y'all know one of the reasons I am a major fan of old movies and TV shows... :)

Same deal here. I always wanted to fly a rotary winged aircraft, i.e. helicopter, but between the time, expenses, etc. it was more than I could afford. So I compromised and I learned to fly model radio controlled helicopters. And that is not cheap either, a good quality model aircraft, good quality radio system, motors or engines, fuel or power cells, replacement parts, time spent tinkering and doing repairs, etc. can add up to a lot of money. The good part is that these days is that you can enter into the hobby for a lot cheaper nowadays than decades ago. You can get a small electric indoor/backyard machine for well under $100 dollars that will perform well and serve as a learning, training, or sport platform. From there the cost can vary tremendously from a couple hundred for a reasonably priced medium sized sport, high performance or scale gas or electric model, to several thousand dollars for a large scale jet powered model. But the good part is there is a much wider range of choices and price ranges out there today and it did (sort of) give me the opportunistic to get into flying a rotor. Not quite the real thing but still a lot of fun and satisfaction.

On Sunday afternoon, as we were almost done tearing down & cleaning up, one of the RC hobbyists came over and asked if he could borrow our mobile trailer-mounted tower. Seems his plane had had a control failure & crashed into a pine tree about 30 feet up, too high for him to reach. He didn't want to abandon his expensive plane, so would we mind parking the trailer under the tree, and raising it so that he could climb up it to get his plane?
We turned him down. Had to. Can you imagine what would have happened if we'd actually tried this, and we either had the tower tip over due to a center-of-gravity or off-balance issue, or a cable had failed & the tower sections had come down with him on them? Let alone if he reached the wrong way (and wasn't using a safety belt) and slipped?

During this year's Field Day, there were some RC aircraft flying around in the fields across the access road from us.
Well, it sounds like they were a at least a safe distance away from where you guys were operating. . I got very angry a couple years ago when I saw a couple guys maneuvering a 450 size electric helicopter rather close to some spectators, to the point of being almost overhead of the spectators. When they were finished I went up to them and I told them what they were doing was extremely dangerous. A 450 size electric heli can inflict some very seriousinjury if someone were to get lopped by the blades. One guy responded by telling me that his friend has been flying for years and is an expert flyer. I told him that it doesn't matter, all it takes is a couple seconds of equipment malfunction and before you know it it could go down and hit a spectator. I added that anyone who places that much faith in their equipment working perfectly all the time should probably think about taking up a different hobby. Besides, there was plenty of room. They could have told the spectators to move back a few yards or else the could have moved further away. They knew was right but they seemed to be a bit too embarrassed to admit it. I also added that the hobby has a pretty excellent safety record. It's not worth spoiling it by taking unnecessary risks.

I wouldn't abandon an expensive aircraft either. But you are right. A much safer way would be to launch up a line and yank the aircraft free of the branches. Usually they can be pulled down. Better to do some repairs on the plane than to risk getting sereiously injured or killed trying to retrieve it. I am sure he could have stayed watch while one of his friends went to get some kind of line to launch into the tree.
It is also a good idea not to fly an rc aircraft in close vicinity to an area where high powered transmitting is being done. Although today's modern rc equipment is much more reliable and much more immune to radio interference than the older equipment there is still a chance that some interference can occur that could cause the control system to glitch.
I should have mentioned that N3SH/3 FD 2013 was held in Mingo Creek State Park down near 84, PA. We had a permit for one of the pavillions for the weekend (including overnight), but across the access road were a lot of big, open fields.
Better yet... I found a picture from N3NWR that will show you the field the gentleman was flying in, and the tree (on the right behind the tower trailer) that his plane ended up in:
10352
The plane was in the upper branches, so it was well out of the gentleman's reach.
Incidentally, that was a very interesting homebrew antenna that W3WH, K3HCR & K3VX were working on assembling. It was a hamstick dipole (I believe this was for 20 meters, and if I'm wrong, then it was for 15), and Larry had fashioned a way to use flexible (as opposed to rigid) electrical conduit to form a tripod. Worked quite well, too.
