Hola! I'm Chris, newly christened by the FCC as K9CCH, and I've just joined your little soirée. So far I am REALLY enjoying this place from what little I've seen. You actually have an artists area, which is right up my alley! Thanks to W7XF for introducing me, as I would have never known about it otherwise. Looking forward to meeting more of you and making new friends!

Two things....
Exactly where/what is the Corn Desert?
And secondly, I was or have been absolutely paranoid almost for a while, because of the misconception that ham radio was dominated by the "participants" you mention. It's probably why I've hesitated to attend a local club meeting. I have a fear of old crotchety men with negative attitudes and extremely right views. However, the train wreck threads over there have really opened my eyes and shown me just how wrong that misconception is. I was surprised to see how many supporters and friendly folks there were popping up.

Corn Desert = Illinois. I just moved here from California about 8 months ago.
You can't judge ham radio by the zed idiots or the morons on 75 meters. Right wing fools seem to like to hear themselves talk and we have our share of those in ham radio. I don't bother listening to them as I know what they're going to say pretty much all the time anyway.
As for the club scene, I think most people are pretty cool. I'm a bit .alt myself and I showed up unannounced at field day with the local club and took over their phone HF station and made a bunch of contacts. Everyone was really nice. A little shy at first, but they got over it.
I'm sure at some point someone will probably not dig something I say or do, but I can't worry about that. Politics is strictly off limits for me at club functions (unlike here) and I've found if we just stick to the radio everything is just peachy. There was one guy at the last meeting who wanted to babble about Benghazi, but the other members ignored him and we moved on to something else. They liked the fact that I did about 2/3 of their field day score so I guess that was good enough.
It's all good. I try to stay away from negative orbit, but sometimes I'm not always successful.

Welcome Chris! Dancing on rooftops naked?? I seem to miss all the fun. It is ok to be out here. I found out that 90% of the Islanders do not care. If you say nasty things about Ten Tec radios, you might be asked what your specific problems with that brand. Other than that, have fun. Well, I'm originally from a small town called Gueydan, LA. and all my family is still there. My parents and sister now live in Broussard. I'm a bred, born, and raised Cajun.
I'm only living in Houston because its close to my momma, it's a major metro area, and I have state retirement benefits for which I can take my first retirement in 12 years at age 45.
After I take my retirement, I'm high tailing it back to Cajun Country.

True, but there are also some great people on 75. Have had some of my best radio conversations on 75 meters. Of course I was operating on the AM mode in the unofficial so called "AM Window", although we can and do operate AM pretty much anywhere phone is permitted. Some of the AM'ers can be a but cliquish but are generally always welcoming to newcomers. On the other hand there are some SSB groups that will pretty much ignore you unless you have been a part of their clique for eons. Then again I have also had some great SSB chats on 75. I guess jerks will be jerks no matter where they go and decent people will be decent wherever they go.

Oh GAWD, 75M AM has been a prime source of entertainment since the mid 60s when the AM Gangstas showed up. If you're not crazy to begin with (in that case you'll be welcomed immediately) you soon will be and will pick up their language quickly enough, Timtronese. I'm most familiar with the Northeast Division having met a few at 'festers and other antisocial gatherings where if you need a manual for just about any radio gear look up Pete WA2CWA aka Manual Man. http://www.manualman.com/ (Rather unabashed promo, eh?) Hang out there long enough and you'll learn about the piss weak little mobile, what pissolene is and how to build your very own Slimotron (pron. slime-o-tron). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VY3LoATtY2o

We have some 75m AM folks here, but they are not very enlightened. I say hey from time to time, but the blatant racism and constant talk about guns is either disgusting or boring... frequently both. My favorite AM ragchews have been on 10m and 6m when open.
Now, Timtron, from what little bit I've heard , is hilarious.

hmmm... I thinking more of the New England AM Gangsta's of which Timtron reigns supreme. Most of the time they talk radio and tech stuff. Either about building up 813 rigs and stuff like that to modding out older radios so they produce that hi fi New England AM sound. Although nowadays you'll also hear alot of talk about solid state stuff, class E rigs, etc. Now and then you'll get some guys who are into talking about guns and/or an occasional jerk who will spew racist stereotypes. I was really disheartened one night when I heard an old time AM'er who I had great admiration for, long before I got my ham ticket, on the air one night spewing all sorts of racial stereoptypes and condemnations, stereotyping and putting down young people (basically claiming all today's young people were a bunch of lazy, disrespectful, dope addicts with no morals or interests in anything except getting laid, stealing, and shooting dope) while at the same time glamourizing the generations of the 1930's, 40, and 50's, as if nobody during those days did any of those things that he was claiming all of todays young people do. I could have gotten on the air right then and their and challenged him but I thought better of it, figuring it was a combination of old age, confusion, and medication doing the talking.
Fortunately most of the AM stuff I hear is usually void of that kind of stuff and mostly tech talk. But occaisionally a nutter or two will jump in. Guess thats true everywhere.

While I'll agree that any "radio" linked via the Internet really isn't true 'radio', for us little folks its the only way to get out of our neighborhood until we move up a few notches.
I still have great aspirations of DX'ing from a hill top, with nothing more than a radio in the back of my Jeep and a home brew antenna strapped to the tailgate - but until I get to that point, IRLP will have to suffice.

Around here, everything is real enough radio. We don't give a fu(k like the other place. Besides, we'll find a whole bunch of other shit to beat you up about.
If you have your spare tire on the back, make a bracket to accommodate the antenna. If not, I'm sure the tailgate will work, if not, there's always the tailpipe.

I did lotsa IRC for a long time. Preferred pIRC when it showed up.
Scripts of ASCII pics, WinAmp for music and other audio needs.
