Just had some qso's on 160 with the usual gang ( UK, Netherlands, Germany) that's it.

Spaceweather.com (http://www.spaceweather.com/) reports a strong geomagnetic storm is in progress as Earth passes through a region of south-pointing magnetism in the solar wind. The storm has generated auroral displays as far south as Kansas in the US. The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/) indicates the storm is a G3 level event. WWV (http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ftpdir/forecasts/wwv/0629wwv.txt) announced at 0900 UTC, “Geomagnetic storms reaching the G3 level are likely” over the next 24 hours. NOAA says that in a G3 level storm, HF radio may be intermittent. Calculated band conditions reported on the DX Summit (http://www.dxsummit.fi/) site indicate “poor” conditions on 80 through 10 meters. WWV reported the estimated planetary K index at 0900 UTC was 5 (the 0600 UTC figure was 7). As Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA, explains (http://www.arrl.org/the-sun-the-earth-the-ionosphere), “The A index is an average of the eight 3-hour K indices, and uses a linear scale and goes from 0 (quiet) to 400 (severe storm). The K index uses a quasi-logarithmic scale (which essentially is a compressed version of the A index) and goes from 0 to 9 (with 0 being quiet and 9 being severe storm). Generally an A index at or below 15 or a K index at or below 3 is best for propagation.” In recent hours the A index has been 22, and the K index has ranged from 5 to 7. As of 0900 UTC, the sunspot number was 83, and the solar flux index was 100. Spaceweather.com predicts, “When the current spate of geomagnetic storms is over, another could follow close on its heels.” A coronal mass ejection (CME) is expected to deliver a glancing blow to Earth’s magnetic field late on June 30 or early on July

What are you using for 160 ?

PA5COR
07-01-2013, 05:39 AM
Inverted L 77 feet high look me up at Qrz with piccie.
Fed at the base with the MFJ 998 auto tuner legal limit and 3000 feet of wire in/on the ground in radials.
Used for 160 - 10 with the autotuner, though mostly the other vertical on the roof will be used from 17 to 10.
The Heathkit SB-1000 rebuild with new tube does 800 - 900 watts max ( tranny set for 240 volts while we have 230 volts mains here) to lower the 5 volt for the tube and having 3200 volts on the anode.

The L consists of titanex tubing bought from Germany from other sources starting at 3 1/2 inch at the bottom and ending up at 23 meters high with 1 1/2 inch tubing, from there a 77 feet long wire runs to a tree at 45 feet above the ground.
I kept the L longer as a 1/4 wave to prevent 1/2 wave length on 80 and high feedpoint impdance so the autotuner has no problems tuning the L on any band.
At the same time the current max is a bit higher off the ground on 160 hence less losses to the ground radial network.
On 80 it is a blast of DX compared to the OCF mostly 3 S points louder in Japan from the Netherlands as the horizontal wire.
Same on 40 though more dependant for longer distances for the L, 20 is a ball toss up, sometimes the L wins sometimes the OCF wins.
Above 20 the L starts to show a radiation pattern that becomes erratic, just luck if you have a lobe at the right angle, so there I use the other vertical.

The Russian contacts were made with 100 watt though from the FT 2000 - D at 1/2 power out, The Mike is a MD-1 from Yaesu i have since 35 years and the EQplus from W2IHY.
Cost for the L was 300 Euro's including tubing, isolator and aramid guying rope 5 mm and strength 800 Kilo's .
The OCF wire ( Fritzel FD-4) has a coil of 180 micro Henry at the short end and 30 feet of extra wire behind the coil and resonates so as well on 160 as shortened dipole, and works as OCF from 80 - 10.
That one is up at 45 feet above the ground, good conductive young sea clay.
That way with just 3 antenna's for H.F. i can pick a vertical or horizontal antenna each with its own radiation pattern and pick the one that works the best for that station at that time at that band from 160 - 10.

PA5COR
07-02-2013, 03:46 AM
Thanks, took me some experimenting first with shorter ones helically wound 1/2 wavelength alu wire on camo sticks as the upper piccie showed.
Had a T antenna from that, worked quite nice but rstricted to one band only.
Have a good radial field, that is the secret specially close to the feedpoint cover the ground with chicken wire to get max cover.
As you can see on QRZ on my little plot of 100 x 25 feet and some sneaking wires to neighbours with their permission i got a good cover and low ground resistance and hence more efficiency.

Have fun on the bands ;)

Exists a Dumb Obscure Router Configuration (DORC) annoying, many confusing paths there are.

http://bmimages.jr.com/productimages/FNK389890.PNG?CELL=325%2C325&QLT=85&CVT=jpeg

But here's the short version. Frequently found by entering your gateway IP number in your URL.

Open a CMD (DOS) window, type ipconfig and scroll the window if needed. Likely ends in a "1".

Very commonly it's 192.168.1.1 (http://192.168.1.1) OR 192.168.2.1 (http://192.168.2.1) OR 192.168.3.1 (http://192.168.3.1) defaults for most home routers.

Click them if you want to see, but tread lightly if you poke further, if it's an unknown territory.

If it is new territory you can look up the model number on the web and get going.

When you do pass this threshold of doom, be careful and find the "backup".

Jot down and/or screen print where the backup is to remember where they are.

Or, you will be eaten by a Grue. ;)

Basic Information

EchoLink requires that your router or firewall allow inbound and outbound UDP to ports 5198 and 5199, and outbound TCP to port 5200. If you are using a home-network router, you will also need to configure the router to "forward" UDP ports 5198 and 5199 to the PC on which EchoLink is running.
This can be summarized as:Allow UDP destination ports 5198-5199 between Internet and PC in both directions
Allow TCP (source port any, destination port 5200) from PC to Internet

The information above applies to every situation, regardless of the type of equipment and software you are using. If the information below does not help you solve the problem, please consult your equipment's documentation, or contact the manufacturer for support, and provide them with the information above.

Note: If you are using Internet security software and have recently upgraded to a newer version of EchoLink, you may need to re-apply the special security settings you had established earlier.

Freakin' Windows. There's a reason I only use it on my shack computer, and only then because there's a lack of ham radio software for Mac.

Anyhow, we can work 40m phone if you want. That would make Janet happier.

I can do 20, probably 17 as well although I've never tried to tune up for the phone section of that band. Pick a freq.

ON EDIT: looks like 17 is out for me--internal tuner on the 746 can't tune my wire. 20 is good, though.

EDITING THE EDIT: Never mind, operator error. 17 is fine.

Thats my go to mode. Its really nice, and great for long distance coms. I just got done making a few qso’s to Cuba on psk31. You don’t need much power and you don’t need the top of the line antennas. Probably the next best thing to cw in my opinion.

1) It's no more difficult to use either, here.
2) Florida always has better propagation than those of us further North. Sometimes it's a bear just to hear Hawaii here, let alone anything around Indonesia & SE Asia. Most of those areas are polar paths and they're always tough.
3) I haven't done PSK in several years. It lost its appeal some time ago.

I had internet before I had a ham ticket. course I got a radio to talk on or play with that old mode called cw. I always thought it was strange hooking a pc up to a radio to me it defeated the purpous of having a radio (guess coming from the pc/net world before ham like i said. tapping on a keyboard to talk to someone via rf.. I could do it without rf via a email)

course a few of us over here think the same way. radio for radio and pc for internet.
