The Carpenter's bass player is now the principal Tubist in the Detroit Symphony.

My friend, N6LDP, has some early master recordings of the Carpenters, and one of them is Wes Jacob's playing some really insane tuba solo that covers about 4 octaves. The guy is incredible.

is that what they call heavy metal?

Back in about 1976. Actually, I'm not sure what they called it then, but it was before the depressing, violent stuff of today.

Here's someone's home video of "Rock Candy."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYgIddJX2xE

Lord! Oh, yeah.
When you need a friend through thick and thin
Don't look to those above you.
When you're down and out, ain't no doubt
Nobody wants you.

But you're rock candy baby
Hard, sweet and sticky.
Rock candy baby
Hard, sweet and sticky.

When you're seventeen reachin' for your dreams
Don't let no one reach it for you.
Pull up your pants,
Stretch out take a chance.
If it can be done, you can do it.

Actually pretty "upbeat" for a lot of the heavy metal / acid rock stuff (which I never liked anyway).

I detect a hint of Talking Heads in there. :D

Well, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know.
Oh, the dashboard melted, but we still have the radio.

Oh, it should've been, could've been worse than you would ever know.
Well, you told me about nowhere well it sounds like someplace I'd like to go.

Oh, it could've been, should've been worse than you would ever know.
Well, the windshield was broken but I love the fresh air y'know.

Oh, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know, oh!
Oh, we talked about nothing which was more than I wanted you to know-oh-oh-oh-oh.
Now here we go!

Oh! It would've been, could've been worse than it had even gone
Well, the car was on blocks, but I was already where I want.

Why should we ever even ever really even get to know?
Oh if the world don't like us it'll shake us just like we were a co-oh-oh-oh-old.
Now here we go!

Well we scheme and we scheme but we always blow it
we've yet to crash, but we still might as well tow it
Standing at a light switch to each east and west horizon,
Every dawn when you're surprising,
And the evening was consoling
Saying "See it wasn't quite as bad as"

Well, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know.

I was patiently erasing and recording the wrong episodes
after you had proved my point wrong,
It wasn't like I'd let it go, oh-oh-oh. Oh-oh-oh.
I just wanted to catch the last laugh of this show.

Yeah, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know.
Oh, the dashboard melted, but we still have the radio.

Hard-wired to conceive, so much we'd have to stow it
Even needs have needs, tiny giants made of tinier giants.
Don't wear eyelids so I don't miss the last laugh of this show.

Oh, we could've been, should've been worse than you would ever know.oh
Well, you told me about nowhere well it sounds like someplace I'd like to go-oh-oh-oh-oh.
Now here we go!

Well we scheme and we scheme but we always blow it

Yeah, it's amazing. The drugs then weren't nearly as strong as the stuff today. I still prefer the music of that age more than anything that has come out since. I would have had a ball if I was about 5 years older. Where's the good war protest songs today?

Here's Bob Seger's "No More" with a war protest slideshow. It's the only good war protest tune I've heard on the Iraq debacle - came out last year. Audio is way overcompressed.

Man..That's cool. I guess I was 11 or 12 when happened. I was dorking out listening to what my sister had. Simon and Garfunkel mostly. Pop bought me a little dinky pocket AM radio and there was a station in Charlotte that used to sign with Hendrix playing the Star Spangled Banner. I'd put my little ear plugs in and groove. Lovin' it!
I had the chance to see Jimi once, but blew it. Denver Pop Festival, 1969, was a 3-day concert (but no overnight stuff like Woodstock). A friend and I got permission from our folks to go to ONE night of it and we picked the first night which had Three Dog Night, Frank Zappa and Iron Butterfly. Jimi played on the 3rd night and it turned out to be the last performance for Experience. Experience disbanded before Woodstock, two months later. Today, no parent in their right mind would let their 13 year old kid go to something like that. It probably effed me up for life, but I don't remember much of it.

The long version:

I was just turning 16 when Woodstock happened. I was the only person under 22 in my neighborhood NOT to go. Some people were missing for over a year after that, but they all came home eventually. I was alone for nearly 10 days as the highway was stopped from the City Line in the Bronx all the way up to Yatzgers Farm.

That was the year of the 20th Century. Woodstock, the First Moon Landing and the '69 Miracle Mets beat the Oriole Dynasty in a year when they had 3 20-game winners (and 1 who won 19).

If I ever live through another year like that I'm not gonna make it.

To be honest, I'm not sure I was aware of Woodstock until after it happened. My folks took us kids to see the movie when it came out, though -- believe it was rated 'R' for the very minor nudity it contained, and probably some of the language.

I probably overromanticize that era, but I sure would have loved to have been old enough to really "appreciate" it back then. Living a semi-sheltered kidhood out in the center-country 'burbs, it was just sound bytes on the radio and TV for the most part. In the summer of 1970, we took a family trip to San Francisco (my grandpop lived in SF) and spent a week there. Never got close to the Haight, but I think I still have a copy or two of one of the underground "free" papers. XYL and I went to SF in 1978 for our honeymoon. That's probably the closest I've been to "free love." :P :P

According to der wiki:

He died on July 3, 1971, at age 27, and was found in his bathtub in 17 rue Beautreillis by Courson. According to Stephen Davis' biography of Morrison, it was reported that he had dried blood around his mouth and nose and large bruising on his chest. This suggests Morrison might have died from a massive hemorrhage caused by tuberculosis. Many fans and biographers have speculated that the cause of death was a drug overdose, but the official report listed the cause of death as heart failure. Pursuant to French law, no autopsy was performed because the medical examiner found no evidence of foul play. The lack of an official autopsy left many questions unanswered and provided a fertile breeding ground for speculation and rumor.

Edit to add: Morrison's body was discovered by his common-law wife, Pamela Courson. She inherited Morrison's estate and died of a heroin overdose about three years later. Upon her death, her parents inherited her (and, by association, Morrison's) estate.

You rule, rotley. Thanks for the highlight of this F*'in day.

Surrealistic Pillow story, for real... I've got a copy of that album, bought new, "back then." Still a fave.

Back in the dope smokin' days of innocence, had a good friend whose Grandpappy was a General in the local National Guard. Really cool old gent and he lived (and farmed) 80 acres across the street from the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, where they farmed chemical weaponry. We used his land for a Field Day site a few times in the late 70's. Always had an American flag on one of the towers, too.

Anyway, one time, the old guy was out of town and he trusted the place to his grandson. Little farm house in the boonies, and no radio gear at all! But, party was a must, and it was easy to bring in a stereo and some girlfriends. 'Bout half passed stoned, there was a knock at the door. Opened the door to a Sherriff's deputy, his .44 was unholstered. Yikes! He knew the old man was out of town and was "checkin' up" on the place. Ahhh... grand kid had it all under control; nothing of interest here, move along. Deputy Dog left without firing a shot (or making an arrest).

On the turntable, and bellowing out of whatever amp we had at the time: Surrealistic Pillow.

Tanks for the memories. :P

That's a "Fox" concert; local classic rock station -- they always bring some great acts to town. Their morning jocks are "compassionate bikers" and have their own band, The Groovehawgs -- big into Harleys. They do an annual "Hawgfest" with all you need -- bikes, babes and beer. Locally, they've opened for The Who.

My fave concert band (once flew to Phoenix cuz a buddy down there had a spare ticket):

The little ole band from Texas.

Living in Texas, they are on the radio constantly there. The Fabulous Thunderbird's, Stevie Ray, and a few others. A few friends of mine at work were crazee about Eric Johnson. One of them was dating a gal over at Threadgills in Austin. Well to make a long story short, she quit dating my coworker and started dating Eric. He apparently saw her in the crowd at the concert and recognized her from the restaurant. I don't really know where that relationship went, and I am not sure of the whereabouts of the autographed CD's my coworker had either.

Loud, obnoxious, free-spirited. And the weed that one guy passed down the aisle made everybody cough, and five minutes later, nobody had a complaint.

FWIW and nothing to do with anything, but I've never been a HUGE Beatles' fan. Some good stuff, truly, but probably more critical acclaim than deserved. Anyway, the Beatles stuff has never been available on the digital streams because it is all jointly owned by Michael Jackson (unnnngghh!) and Sony Music (ungh!). Jackson, being the pedophile twit that he is has never allowed the conversion of the Beatle's work to MP3 or any of the DRM variants. Anyway, I read somewhere recently that remastering to digital is now in progress and it might all be available soon. Not sure what changed the minds of the powers in control there. Meanwhile, all of Paul McCartney's work was released on digital just a week or two ago and is already in the #1 slot in Rhapsody's classic rock genre.

Ya either drop tha hits like de la O or get tha
Fuck off tha commode
Wit tha sure shot, sure ta make tha
Bodies drop
Drop an don't copy yo, don't call this
a co-opt
Terror rains drenchin', quenchin' tha thirst of
Tha power dons
That five sided fist-a-gon
Tha rotten sore on tha face of mother earth gets
bigger
Tha triggers cold empty ya purse
They rally round tha family
With a pocket full of shells
Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes
Not need, just feed the war cannibal animal
I walk tha corner to tha rubble that used to be a
library
Line up to tha mind cemetery
What we don't know keeps tha contracts alive an
movin'
They don't gotta burn tha books they just remove
'em
While arms warehouses fill as quick as tha cells
Rally round tha family, pockets full of shells
Rally round tha family
With a pocket full of shells
Bulls on parade

We're taking my Dad (he's 81) to the Renaissance Fair today, with my kid and her kid. 4 generations. Gotta get this stuff in and have some fun while he's still around. Been kind of a rough coupla years; Mom died about 6 months ago after a year in a nursing home (wouldn't wish that on anyone).

Hopefully get to see this guy (it's really an impressive show):

from their new CD, "Minutes to Midnight".

Yall have a great day.

If Pop was YouTubing, he would like this. One of his favorites.

I had never heard that one before. Sounds like something from the Ed Sullivan Show. It looks like the singer has a really big shoe.

Cool! I could just see the rehersals where the conductor says "No No No...Let's go back 3rd Coda 5th bar on there's a freight train coming....1 and 2 and 3". Envoke Baton.

Anyway...drummer with one arm.
