Most of the PTT stuff requires a serial connection, which you can do via a USB-Serial adapter. I don't do contesting though, so I've got no know-how there.

gMFSK is always my first choice for datamodes. Clean, easy to configure, lightweight.

Under Linux, I like FLDigi for digital modes. It has a logging app built in but the only thing I do that comes close to contesting is Field Day, so I don't know how well it work in a real contest. Here's a site (http://radio.linux.org.au/?sectpat=logging)with a bunch of different log apps, maybe one of them will be good for you.
