I got a motel in Richmond, IN. We will head out early in the morning, catch the TAPR presentation and then I have a teleconference at 11:00 until noon. Work never goes away.

It looks like I'm stuck at home for the weekend. No ride materialized. And I'm glad now I didn't ask K3AIR to wait on me, we got home at 20 after 10.

Word from some of the QRP guys is that Ten Tec is going to introduce a new QRP rig, Model 506, the Rebel. It's allegedly an open-source factory-ready SDR rig for 40 & 20, based on the Arduino-compatible "Chip Kit Uno 32" platform.

If someone could get a couple of pictures & some literature & send them to me, I'd appreciate it!

I'll head over there on Saturday and check it out. Still in love with my Paragons/Omni V/VI so I won't be buying anything. Well...maybe. A 526 and an Argonaut V would be just the ticket for going on the road.

About that test gear I was looking for...

After several trips around the place and almost 10 miles walked I sent the following via text to 'DSG:

9656

I've never seen so much Drake 7-line and later-model TenTec gear down here - it's unreal. But there's not one Cobra 2000 or CPI piece of equipment to be found anywhere and the TM500/5000 series plugin pickings are mighty few, mighty far between, pricy and beat to hell.

More later. Time to get showered and meet the crew for dinner.

Funny thing is, before you posted that picture, I had talked with Mike last night, right before the ballgame started, and he was telling me about that... said there were originally at least two, but someone bought the other one (that he saw) sometime on Friday. We agreed that it would be a neat thing to display in the shack, and if it could also serve a useful purpose, all the better!

The place is so big that you have to make a concerted effort to find your buds, let alone avoid your enemies.

If push comes to shove we could always rent and set up an outdoor boxing ring - stick a few fake palms and some sand around it - then charge admission to watch 3-round IoMH Left vs Right Fights.

He loves the thing. In the motel room, he asked me if he could order a programming cable for it and I said, "give me a few minutes and ill get you one. " so he programmed it up for the home qth. It looks like it was so programmed with a great deal of organization. He is so shy. I hope it helps him to break out of his shell.

Our VX6/VX7s can be programmed like 'WTF's HT - I keep "personalities" on file so if I have to travel for business, personal reasons, etc. the rigs can be set to cover frequencies of interest along the travel route and at the destination.

What do you two have in the way of a fixed VHF/UHF setup? When I was Nathan's age I found the repeater crowd to be somewhat of a cloistered lot...but the simplex crew was much more fun to hang around. In a similar vein we got a 10M SSB net going for the area newcomers. It survives on a different frequency to this day and sees near-constant activity. He would have a lot of fun with something like that.

The Island bus idea sounds better and better the more I think about it. Fred and I can bring the Pace stuff and test equipment to make repairs along the way for all those who keep asking "where can I take my radio to get it fixed. We can even do CB rigs as they are a fast fix and good $$, legal only. For those that can't make a dipole, the Pope can build some of those and some moxons to sell along the way. With all the musicians, a concert at nights should bring in some nice change. Anyone that has a tower to put up, we could help there, too. We just need to take Gretchen along since she is real good with erections.

Drivers won't be a problem since we have so many CL holders. And duck yes, Kevin can drive, I trust my life with him at the wheel.

Let's have everyone suggest what they can add to the mix. Not only can we make a name for ourselves ( like that hasn't already happened) we might raise enough cash to move that broken DC3 off the runway.

The bus sounds like a great idea. Coordination might be interesting.

Some guys in one of the local clubs used to organize a bus run. They'd rent a big Greyhound-type coach, leave here circa Midnight (with a couple of stops), arrive at Hara (with a breakfast stop) circa 7 or 8 AM. So guys could sleep on the trip, spend a Saturday at Hamvention, ride home that night. And the bus had plenty of room to store acquired treasures.

Trip made money every year but the last. The guys donated the profits to their local club. The last year, though, the trip lost about $75, as some people had to drop out. So the organizers asked their club (who usually got over a hundred each year in profits) to cover the losses. The club voted to do so, but to also put an end to the trips. And that was that.

I have a Class A CDL with P (Passenger) endorsement so I volunteer to drive the bus. I let my hazmat endorsement lapse, though, so I might need to get that back for when the rhetoric gets toxic.

My last trip out here in the Uhaul dragging the 63 Rambler (from Tulelake) was not much fun. Especially when I smacked the gas pump island in Nebraska with the trailer. I had insurance, so all is good.
