I recently picked up a macbook pro and some serious sound/music software. Right now running Lion. Is the upgrade to Mountain Lion worth the effort? What are the pros/cons? I am very impressed with the Lion OS as it is. I hate taking something that is fine the way it is, and screwing it up by "improving" it. However, if Mountain Lion is better, I will install it.

Which model is your MacBook Pro? If it's an older one like mine, it may not be able to run anything past Snow Leopard. Click on the Apple menu in the upper left corner. Select "About This Mac" and a window will pop up. Click on the "More Info..." button, and another window will pop up. If it's not already selected, click on the "Hardware" item on the list on the left side of the window, then look at the right-hand pane. The third item down will be "Processor Name." It needs to be an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor.

If your computer can't run Mountain Lion, see if you can find a copy of Snow Leopard somewhere. It should be cheap and you don't need to worry about any sort of copy protection—Apple doesn't require a registration code to install OS X.

Thanks. It is a 2.4 ghz core 2 Duo. It is running OS X 10.7.5 Lion. It is a MBP15. It has 4 gigs of ram, but seems faster than my dad's pc with 4 gig. I was just wondering what the difference was. i always seem to get lost in Apple's website looking at other stuff than i started with. My old mac runs leopard. it still runs great, but I need more powah for what I am planning on doing. Thanks for the info.

Okay, then, there's no reason not to upgrade to Mountain Lion (other than cost, I guess) unless you're running some older software that might give you problems. Apple is generally pretty good about not killing apps with OS upgrades but sometimes developers ignore warnings from the company that certain APIs are going to go away.

It's faster than your dad's PC, because it's running UNIX.

My only gripe about Macs is their price. Nothing else.

That Is my only complaint as well. I just cant bring myself to spend so much on a pc. However, my wife was looking at a mini mac. That wont sting the wallet as much. I have to do some reading up first though.

Apropos of nothing, Apple has just announced that they are abandoning cat names for OS X updates and switching to California place names instead. The first one will be "OS X Mavericks," named for the surfing beach in San Mateo County known for it's huge waves. Again, apropos of nothing, I used to hang out there a lot back in the day before the surfers "discovered" the place, usually under the influence of one experience-enhancing substance or another.

Mac OS X Rhesus does have a nice ring to it.

Mavericks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mavericks_%28location%29) was a cool place to do it, although the locals always referred to the area as Pillar Point before the surfers renamed it. The waves there were always big, often scary-big. A couple of surfers have died riding them.

I have the dmg for Mountain Lion downloaded, and ready to install. I am still getting used to Lion. I am a bit overwhelmed with all of the goodies I installed. I have the latest Logic Studio bundle. I now wish that I had my old keyboard. The Parallels Desktop runs my old winders programs. So far, I am glad I upgraded. Money well spent. I have gone from mac/curious to full blown junkie in a rather short time. I now wish that I had not wasted all of that time, and $ on pc's. I still have an old desktop box that has a ham radio Linux bundle that used to amuse me. :-D
