This company, Terrafugia (http://www.terrafugia.com/), claims to have developed a "practical flying car." Looks cool, but I'll believe it when I see it. It's hard to imagine that wing design providing enough lift.

I have to say that if they do eventually deliver the goods, I want one.

Don't need no stinking wings. It works on anti gravity.

If you look closely at the fan in the rear, it looks more like a fancy swamp boat.

Sorry, I should have pointed out that the image is an illustration, not an actual photo of the thing in flight. Also, I screwed up the link. It's fixed now, but here's the correct one:

The shape looks to be a variation of a "lifting body" design.

I found a photo of the propulsion system.

Yes they do. A lot of bang for the buck. Way fun in model aircraft, too.

Unless you can afford to play with actually jet turbines. They make some awesome and reliable jet turbines for model aircraft and helicopters these days. I would love to try one but the cash I would have to plunk down is a bit steep.

When i saw the title on this thread I was envisioning a guy with a ramjet engine strapped to his back. I have a friend who can't understand why strap on jetpacks are not in common use for personal transportation these days. Time and time again I have tried to explain that they are extremely inefficient as the human body is not very aerodynamic... to put it mildly. But somehow he still doesn't seem to get it.

Remember watching that as a child. The jingle went "Roger Ramjet he's our man, a hero to our nation...blah bla (can't recall the next few words)... so stay tuned to this station" . :)

Turns out those pods on the ends of the wings are actually tilt-able, electrically-driven rotors much like those on a V-22 Osprey. Hmmmm, interesting idea; maybe the thing really could work...
