Ghetto rat culture has found yet one more way to objectify and denigrate seemingly clueless women. Wake up ladies, this shit is just nasty and not the way to be a woman--unless your goal is to audition as either a slut or sex worker...

FYI, this sort of performance and booty bouncing crotch twisting is called twerking. Looks to me like...well, anyway...

30 students at a high school in CA were suspended for making this video. PLUS, they have been banned from prom and walking at their graduation. A little harsh for clueless idiots that think that nothing has a consequence. This sort of thing does more to reinforce a negative view of black culture than that Mountain Dump commercial. You decide.

NSFW due to the rap song--and the 'instant outrage' co-workers with delicate sensibilities might experience. Use your google fu to find news stories in print.

We are doomed. The ghost in the machine rules...

Huh, I don't get it. Stuffing people in a phone booth or a VW, eating gold fish, and the Lindy makes sense, but this...........................

I'm convinced that at least half the population is stupid.

There is a big difference between sexual freedom and giving it all away to be exploited and abused. Some people, sadly, have no clue.

You weren't clear. What makes reinforces a negative image of black culture, the video or the suspension?

If you're saying the video is worse than the Mountain Dew commercial, you're sadly mistaken. They both suck, but the MD commercial reinforces the stereotype that all black men are criminals and gangstas. The stupid goat is peripheral.

You probably wouldn't have posted this if it was a bunch of black teenagers shaking it, but since it was a bunch of pasty faced upper middle white suburbanites, you're outraged. Can't have them contaminated after all.

I find the whole thing distasteful, but that's just me. My daughter wouldn't have been caught dead doing something that lame.

My wife is Lithuanian, and won't take her clothes off in the living room any more. Does that count?.

We have a town near here we call LITH... Lake in the Hills, IL. Women are always taking their clothes off there. Well, okay. They take their clothes off in most towns, I guess.

[1] If you're saying the video is worse than the Mountain Dew commercial, you're sadly mistaken. They both suck, but the MD commercial reinforces the stereotype that all black men are criminals and gangstas. The stupid goat is peripheral.

[2] You probably wouldn't have posted this if it was a bunch of black teenagers shaking it, but since it was a bunch of pasty faced upper middle white suburbanites, you're outraged. Can't have them contaminated after all.

[3] I find the whole thing distasteful, but that's just me. My daughter wouldn't have been caught dead doing something that lame.

Whew Janet, this is one where I don't even know where to start. Let's try here:

[1] What does the commercial say about the other men in the lineup? Nothing except they are young and black, with ridiculous names that are a play on other things in popular black culture. And where do the people in a real world lineup come from? They are convicted jail inmates, police officers and staff, and volunteers--along with the alleged suspect. So aside from the goat, who was who? Unfortunately 1 in 48 Americans are incarcerated, or under some sort of community control such as probation or parole. 1 in 36 of those are people of color. 9% of black men in their 20s are incarcerated.1,2 Also, at issue are the social dynamics and rejection of self respect and worth in expressing sexuality in the song and video. The suspension and other sanctions are nothing more than a knee jerk reaction by those who are horrified by the factors I set forth in the latter part of [2] in this response.

Nationwide, African-Americans represent 26% of juvenile arrests, 44% of youth who are detained, 46% of the youth who are judicially waived to criminal court, and 58% of the youth admitted to state prisons (Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice). For Black males in their thirties, 1 in every 10 is in prison or jail on any given day.3 1 in 3 black men can expect to go to jail or prison at some time in their lives.4,5 The causes vary, but one thing is certain. This is an abject social fact--not a stereotype.

We have not even gotten to the fucking goat. He is important--as he personifies a lifestyle that lands the majority of those juveniles and young black men in their 20s into prison--that of the player, gangster, or thug. That is as real as ham radio--and is another vehicle for economic exploitation of the lifestyle (not a stereotype either) through media, apparel, and targeted appurtenances of invidious comparison. The attitude is one that makes billions for corporations. You bet your ass he is important to the vertical advertising segment that this commercial was target toward.

[2] You should get the maximum number of points for this one--two logical fallacies in two short sentences. Fallacy/Fallacy and Tu Quoque all at once. Until you mentioned it, I had not taken note that the majority of the girls were "a bunch of pasty faced upper middle white suburbanites." Outrage? Hardly--as I don't react with instantaneous internet outrage based upon things like white guilt, bigotry, racial apologetics, and artificially inflated sensitivities of political correctness. It would be the height of irony for me to do so--given my ancestry and personal biography.

If you knew anything at all about me, you would know that this is a commentary on social mores and morals--not racism--and that I have spent years living, writing and working in communities of color--indicting self defeating behaviors and working toward solutions. Given this, I think also we have 'hasty generalization' in the mix here to. That makes three.

[3] I agree completely that it is distasteful and abhorrent--as it reflects a social dynamic that is consigning youth to some very sad outcomes. That is my point in posting. Also, I am happy to hear that your daughter is beyond such things. But watching this, and being in any spring break town (or most dance clubs on Friday/Saturday night) confirms that all too many teenagers and young women--especially those in communities of color are not... Again, we are in the realm of reality and not stereotype.

As a fan of Dave Chappelle and sometimes Daniel Tosh I tend to agree with Pat on this one. The commercial was very stupid, and offensive to a point. But offensive sells if you don't go to far, and it tends to be cultural. The Brazilians have ads featuring Bin Laden and terrorists in general. Really, they do, and it sure wouldn't fly here. That being said, does this mean the goat is the scapegoat? I mean, that's pretty snarky if that's the intent.

But they could have done a better job on the funny, and maybe added a few other racial "profiles" in the lineup. An angry white dude with an NRA hat would have been great. ;)

The twerking is stupid, but I sure remember skirts so short that fancy panties became the thing when I was a kid. Because they showed. The girls knew it too. Same with really tight jeans. Our culture gives a lot of motivation to both sexes to wear stupid shit. Hell, I wore tight pants when I was young because the girls liked it. A lot.

Women are objectified far more than men, but it happens to both sexes.

Somehow the image of you twirling about on a stripper pole in your living room has damaged a small section of my prefrontal cortex...
