View Full Version : Hazard Pay?

This is for all the musicians on the board. In the bands I've played with, we always joke about our Hazard Pay List. These are songs that you have played several time more than once too often. They're not bad songs, just ones you dread playing........again. Don't forget to add the Hazard pay needed to play it.

Mustang Sally $30 Great song. I've just played too too many times.

That Old Time Rock and Roll $50. It's been long enough that the price is slowly going down

Sweet Home Alabama $100 Nuf said.

The Chicken Dance. $ Lots. This one requires Many zero's to the left of the decimal place. A fully loaded Armor car might contain enough money to get me to do it. We have literally turned down gigs because people required it.

There are many others. Whats on your list?

How much do you charge when someone shouts out "FREE BIRD!" between songs?

We do the cruelest thing we can do. We put down the guitars and do a pseudo Bluegrass version on Banjo, Mandolin, upright bass and brushes on snare. We shorten it a bit of course....

I always thought Myron was genuine.

In Tule when it would snow hard, we used to get drunk and watch the Lawrence Welk shows during the PBS pledge drives.

They did have some serious musicians. No one could play the piano like Jo Ann Castle, even though they always put her in some silly ass costume.

LOLOL.

I saw a great local band here last week called "Gumbo Le Funque". http://gumbolefunque.com/

The lead singer was informed that one of our party was having her birthday. He came over and hung out with us during a break, and I requested a Dr. John's "Such a Night". He laughed and said hell YEA! As long as it's not Sweet Home Alabama.

I agree. It's painfully lame. But, I think the blonde woman look kind of cute. She looks sorta euro.

Far as pay goes, well, I never got paid to play. As long as the audience doesn't say "boo" and throw stuff at us IO guess we're doing ok.

No amount of Money would ever get me to play Achy Breaky Heart again. None.

I've mentioned my love for Free Bird...I've racked up over 172 hours of that one, and that doesn't even cover learning and practicing it.. enough is enough.

Anything that reminds me of my nights spent in Spandex and AquaNet. Never ever.

Wonderful Tonight, Cocaine, Gimmie Three Steps, etc. ---Maybe, with a fifty dollar cash tip before the first note is struck; Each.

Now that I think about it...I like very much that I really don't play other peoples stuff any more. Good or bad, it ours and we own it.

Neat topic Archie, tnx.

Egads! "Itchy Scrachy But". Yeah that's way up there. Several steps over "Save a horse, Ride a cowboy" or any so called country song that features a rapper.

Covers can be fun but, usually when you restyle the song completely. We used to do funk version of "All Shook UP" If you think about it, it lends itself quite nicely to a bit of funk. I love what the bone shakers did with "Cold Sweat" I seems to me the when a band does a cover they should find something new in the song or it should explain something about the band itself. Sort of like when heart did a Zeppelin cover. It explained what they were listening to and where they were coming from. Joe Jackson on one of his live albums did a very slow torch ballad version of the song "Stepping Out" that is amazing. He really found something new in the song.

I agree with you about playing original music. We are certainly at our best as a band when we are playing our original material. Who do you play with and where can one here some of your music? A little shameless self promotion: I play with the Steven L Smith Band. We have a bunch of our music up on the web site if you are interested. We are just finishing up doing some videos of some live performances. Hopefully by the end on the summer we will be working on another disc. I play guitar and Bass well, drums and keyboards poorly, Well by my standards, and mandolin passably. I'm wondering what you play.

One thing you can be sure of with musicians and ham radio is, they ain't mic shy!

Here's some funky country from a Colorado Band you might enjoy...

Well, they they self label their music "polyethnic slamgrass".

Well thank you very much. Ramble on was recorded with Greg Jennings from Restless Heart on guitar. Timing kept my off that one but, Pieces is all me except for the acoustic guitars, dobro and one electric rhythm thing. Thinking back they might have put a few pedal steel things in there but the electric slide work is mine. Right now we are starting to plan the production of the next disc. We are talking about working with a fellow out of NYC who has a great rep in Americana circles. Of course Americana really means any thing that does not match the current Nashville or Pop formula.

I have to say that your boys from Co. are fun. They have some interesting pastabilities. Their is something sort of Phishy about them Which is not a bad thing in my book.

We mostly work the northeast coast but we have been down as far as South Carolina. I have nothing against heading out to Co. but, we will see if we can book gigs to take us out there and hopefully back as well. Stringing gigs together is a challenge. I would love to hit Co. but, it's unlikely this summer. Steve sold his house this spring and is building a new place. The old house had a really long driveway that needed a tractor to clear when snow comes our way. Leaving his wife and kids with the amount of work to do to keep the driveway open limited our ability to travel in the colder months. With the new house being built it should be easier for us to book out of the area in the fall through spring so, we will see what happens.

As hokey as it may sound if you would like a signed copy, we could make that happen.

Thank you again

Listened to some of it on the way home. Live Free on Pieces is my favorite so far.

I am quite fond of Phish, have seen them 7 times or so now.

Leftover Salmon did a great collaboration with Cracker... This tune "Mr. Wrong" is hilarious!

I absolutely Love cracker! I freely admit I have stolen lots of stuff from listening to Johnny Hickman. I've been a fan David Lowrey since the Camper Van days. I had the good fortune to get to see them lot long ago in smallish club in the area along with Horton Heat who is also am a huge fan of. Sometimes the gods are with you.......
