Why are drums round ?

To fit better in the back of the van?

Avoidance of nodes of tension. Perhaps that would make a good avatar, eh?

That theory would work if they were spherical like pressure vessels, now try looking at the manufacturing process.

"Perhaps that would make a good avatar, eh?"

Yeah, I suppose so.

OK, when it comes to acoustic drums what's so modern about analysis? Just ask yourself the question why are hollow logs round. Then one more, why does striking it at different points result in different tones? If the ancients got all scientific about it a modern drum kit would have one log and two sticks... and a bunch of deaf termites. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZclddLcOYYA

To the best of my knowledge, even logs that aren't hollow, are pretty much round, too. However, you can beat the shit out of one just about anywhere with a Louisville slugger, and they don't change tone very much.

Maybe it's the TIMBRE that changes?

On the other hand, roots are square.

Now you're barking up the wrong log. But you are branching out.

But some roots are cubes.

Some are imaginary.

SEZ THE DESERT RAT, LOUDLY. :spin:

I was once referred to as a "desert rat". During coffee break I used to abandon my male coworkers and sneak off to flirt with and have coffee with the rather good looking secretary of the drafting department. One day one of them found where I was always sneaking off to and called me a "desert rat". I still cannot imagine what he meant by that comment.

I'm thinking because they were once made of skins (like leather) and the even tension that a round drumhead made for a more even sound and a sound that was predictable over the area of the drumhead. I've known a lot of drummers. They're as crazy as they come but they are pretty incredible people to get the sound they do from something like that.

Hmmm, brings back memories of one of my favorite shows on radio and how Lou always put his signature "breathe" in the pause at the end of the show's closing theme. Lou "The Duck" D'Antonio hosted a free-form program (for many years called The Hour of the Duck) at WFMU from 1962-1990. Then a turn of the dial to WOR and the Bahn Frei Polka signaled the beginning of Jean Shepherd's show... Excelsior you fathead!

Why are drums round ?Because, with all due respect to Huey Lewis & the News, it's not hip to be square.

Apparently, not all drums are round:
