View Full Version : WTF is this all about?

So, I'm at my daughters house, and her dog is on the couch next to me. He gets a little rowdy, and rolls over and his foot hits the keyboard on my laptop, and goes across several keys. All of a sudden, the text and background areas turn a sepia color. He has discovered a shortcut to modify screen attributes. The bastid. I try everything and can not correct the problem. Finally, I stumble across a section in the OS for the display which is a calibrate screen color. I run it, and viola' it works. The screen returns to normal. Yay. I give myself a pat on the back, and turn off the LT. Later, when I turn it back on, the screen is FU again, and I have to run the calibrate again. It seems that for some reason, the calibration values are not being saved. I am of the opinion that the only recourse is to dump everything, and reload the OS, which is Win 7 home premium. Before I go through all that, I shall ask the collective conscience of the Island if anyone has any ideas. Related to this problem, that is.
Thanks in advance for the clear and concise solution to this dilemma.

Do you have a relatively recent registry backup?

Does this help?....
From the Microcoft website: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ph/windows7/change-the-colors-on-your-computer
To change colors manually
If you don't want to use the colors associated with your current theme, you can change colors on your computer manually.
1. Open Window Color and Appearance by clicking the Start button 9552, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type window color, and then click Change window glass colors.
2. Click the color you want, and then click Save changes.

Sure, if your idea of "fixing" is to turn it into a few dozen pieces.

Unfortunately, no. I do that reguarly on all my machines, but since this oine is my traveler, I don't use it except when I'm on the road, and I never remember to it. Needless to say, I will in the future.

Yes, I gave that a go. Whereas it will change theme colors, it doesn't seem to be a global thing. The calibrate colors does work, but for some reason it doesn't want to save the setting.

That was the first thing I was going to try, but all my hammers have the head on the other end. I tried turning the laptop around, but the heads were still on the wrong end. The bastids.

Otherwise, have you looked if there is a video card native app (usually is) that sets custom preferences and colorspace? I have an NVIDIA card and have had strange stuff happen between the native Windows settings and what the card control panel wanted to do.

Perhaps you accidentally created an alternate color profile, or altered the default profile? If so, you should be able to use "Color Management" in the control panel to see this in the "Profiles associated with this device" window on the "Devices" tab. This fellow had a different problem, but faced the same issue you are having in saving the color settings you want. The full article is here:

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll post what I end up doing to fix it. Probably the easiest would be to move the head to the other end of the hammer.

If you plug in an external monitor does it do the same thing? :chin:
Pets and snacks do fun things to laptop insides, and they start acting funny. Believe me. However. if it was the internal video cable and connector I'd expect a screwed up pattern on the display, not what you are seeing. But the hard smack of the dog's tail is suspicious. Damn dog.
If the laptop gets too hot because it's airflow is clogged up... video chips can go goofy just like CPU chips can.
