By accident, I just discovered the perfect place for the IOMH mass eyeball QSO we've been threatening to inflict upon an unsuspecting world: Ham Island.

Ham Island
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ham Island is an island in the River Thames in England. It was created when the course of the river was diverted, via a cut, to avoid a weir and provide a navigable route through to Old Windsor Lock.

Today land use is divided between 37 privately owned dwellings. The original houses on the island, now almost entirely rebuilt in a more luxurious style, were quite modest- many holiday homes. The island is also the site of a water treatment plant. This locality is referred to in Three Men in a Boat when, passing through the lock, they spy Windsor Castle in the distance. This trip is still popular today.

Ham Island is some distance away from the London suburb of Ham in Richmond upon Thames.

There's a sewage treatment plant there—how appropriate is that?

I've had several inquiries over the years from the contact form about our association with Ham Island.

But you asked and I answered your question with a question and then you answered your own question. See how smart I am? Look at me! I am smart!

Kind of old news.

Islanders who have been around here a while knew that Todd promised to do a DXpedition from Ham Island. I am not sure whether or not he actually did it.

All the more reason to take a sojourn to a place that has a large sewage treatment facility.

Turns out that there's a Ham Island in Alaska as well. That would be closer to home for a lot of us but there are a couple of problems: no roads, so we'd have to fly in, and no electricity once we got there. No structures at all either.

'DSG got a new Brooks saddle in the mail the other day and inside the box was the 2013 copy of The Bugle. An article detailed a ride called "LeJog", which runs from the southern tip of England clear to the Orkney Islands.

Now if I can get 3 weeks vacation to ride the thing up and back (1800mi total), get an FT817 and accessories into the country...secure two rental touring bicycles and a reciprocal license I'll be more than happy to detour to Ham Island and put it on the air for us for a day or two.

As always, logistics will be...challenging.

I wish I could get the time off to do it, Charles. Two weeks out of the office is pushing things at this point in time. 'DSG's employer would be more of an issue: One week blocks, period.

Come retirement, self-employment or a lottery winning event this could happen but I don't see it occurring otherwise. Guess we could ride the Allegheny Trail from PA to MD and put a few counties on the air along the way.

Did you notice that the sewage part is the 'heart' of Ham Island?

Certainly no correlation there...

Ah. Well, you will need a support crew following along and sometimes ahead in a vehicle. This crew would take the pictures, edit, upload and edit your commentary while carrying essential tools and other supplies. If it is a job, I could do it.

I remember Uncle Floyd, Oogie too. Interesting show, sorta like Soupy Sales for the 70s-80s. Saw Bon Jovi there.

Shoulda been a national show. Maybe Vancouver could've gotten it from Wash. State.

Nah, it lacked the pizazz needed for national, Soupy was MUCH better as a 1 1/2 man act (Give Frank SOME credit) than the whole UF crew put together and still only appeared in the LA and NYC markets. IMO, out of the lot Mugsy was most versatile, the rest including Floyd were one trick ponies. As an aside there was Zacherle, channel 9s answer to LAs Elvira, Mistress Of The Dark. Strange woman, stole Vampira's persona, Vampira sued her and lost. Casandra Peterson was her name, she had a cameo riding in the pink Cadillac convertible at the close of Cheech & Chong's Born In East LA.
