Ok, yes, I'm talking about repeater courtesy beeps and hang times. I've got a repeater up, NOW WHAT? All the fun crap.. Well, we have lots of sarcastic Voice IDs done by local radio DJs/hams, which is cool, and the time ID is done by the "Tom" voice, the same one as on the weather radios.

Now, I'm undecided between quick beep, long hang time, quick beep, short hang time, no beep, long hangtime, etc. Opinions wanted! I guess I'm asking, "What courtesy beep/hang time configuration would your "dream repeater" have?"

Thanks :-)

Heh, yeah. Not on any repeater I would use. Short, quiet beep and a fairly quick drop. No bells, whistles, fart noises, useless information, yada yada.

I got a C.T. and also a 2.7s hang time. (if the controller I have allowed more id go 5s hang)

Longer hang time annoys the piss out of the kerchunkers cause they have to wait so long to chunk again. they get bored and move to another repeater and chunk somewhere else.

if I do voice id (which is doubtful) it would be a short W2IBC Repeater. and thats it. but honestly I have cw id. if someone wants to know what it says then learn code.

Up north my favorite repeater had neither tone nor tail, CWID was transmitted without PL so when monitoring nobody was bothered by it. That's how it's done on public service repeaters, what purpose do they serve on ham repeaters? Oh, one in New York had a frog and with all the kerchunkers at times it sounded like a summer night in the Great Swamp. Speaking of New York, once upon a time there was a lid who put a linked system on all the calling channels..........

...............because anything can happen in New York (and usually does).

Don't forget the nice touch-tone replay feature of the ACC-850 and similar controllers.

There was a spate of "Sierra 8 Papa - Papa 8 Sierra - 6 9 6 9" tests occurring on a couple area machines after they 'upgraded' their controllers in the 80s.

I really don't like courtesy tones and a long hang time.

Are Shackmasters still around? I remember those things were all the rage in the 80's.

The local repeater we had when I was a kid was on 146.76 in Lawrence. No duplexer. The transmitter was on the roof of one dormitory and the receiver was a quarter mile away on another dorm. The two were connected by landlines. It had a long tail.every time the tail would drop, the id would come up the next time it was keyed. WR0ACH.

Don't make a long tail on there. Don't make it id every time it is keyed up. I prefer no voice id. Strictly cw. Let me know when I can come and kerchunk it.

I'll have to remember that one. When I'm teaching my classes, I have to be super careful to set a good example, so I always ID, though I do contend that under the rules, I have 10 minutes in which to do so - not necessarily on the first kerchunk. A kerchunk is a burst of unmodulated carrier - which is expressly OK in the rules for testing purposes. From now on, I'll say, "K0RGR Kerchunking".

We have four repeaters in town. My favorite is the DSTAR machine, which does have a sort of courtesy beep on it, but you never hear the squelch tail. The repeater IDs by sending digital data, though they are running software that announces if the repeater is linked periodically. Two of our analog repeaters have voice ID, beeps, and fairly long squelch tails. The third has CW ID and no beep. I actually don't notice the difference much. The one with no beep has a delay on startup, so you have to key the mike, wait a second, and then speak.

Well, if the triangle tone is not good, how about the Browning "bing" , er "ping"?

Bad enough that drove CBers nuts, good for me since I got $20 a pop to de-ping those things. Now if you want to drive repeater users bonkers use an old Motorola and turn the MODAT unit ID on.

I tend toward the longer hang time. I've had it happen where people know the timing of a short hang repeater and it's awfully hard to get into the rotation. With the long hang you can grab the tail and get in. It took me close to ten minute to get between these two guys when I was trying to report an accident. This was before cell phones were common. It wasn't life threatening but, I had the "good" fortune of seeing it. It was still damned annoying. They were having a long winded rag chew. I finally got in when one timed out the repeater and I could get the attention of the listening station at that time.

I would also encourage you to use the "I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that" for the time out message.

One of the more popular "rag chew" repeaters in the Denver area is "The 145.145".

And, it's known unofficially as the "doubling repeater".

I can impersonate HAL doing that line so well it's kind of creepy.
And the "Daisy, Daisy" song, when HAL's mind is going.

Well, that might not be an impersonation.
