No, it isn't the sound of jobs heading south of the border, it's the Padres. They're 1-5 and look like rank amateurs out there on the field. I figured they weren't going to do well this season but the level of their ineptitude exceeds "not do well" and ventures into the realm of "what the fuck is the matter with these guys?"

Besides, we already have an alternative team to root for. The Nationals. The more they win, the more tickets they sell, the more money that goes into our son's pockets.

I say we take those Washington Senators out of the Capitol Building and get them back out onto the baseball field.

They couldn't do much worse than the Padres.

Only God can help them now, I'm just the Pope. All I can do is advocate for them and hope for the best.

If the Marlins were in the NL West, they'd only be a half-game behind the Padres.

WAIT! It's not the SuperBowl is it? No wonder the Cubs can't make it to the Series.

Much to my surprise, the Padres handled the Dodgers quite well in the home opener yesterday, beating them 9-3. They actually looked like a professional baseball team for the first time this season.

Bump.

Go figure: after winning 7 out of their last 10 games, the Padres are no longer in the NL West cellar. That dubious honor now belongs to the Los Angeles Dodgers. You know, the team with a total payroll of $216 million, second only to the NY Yankees. The Padres, on the other hand, with a measly $71 million payroll, are number 25 out of 30. They are still four games under .500, though.

It's just like my grandma used to say, horse lips won't fit on a water buffalo.

I hope that helps explain it.

How dismal can things get? The first place Yankees losing 5 in a row and 4 of those to the lowly NY Mets. Mets got the sweep! That's almost as bad as being swept by Houston.

At least they've won one vs. the Bosux. If they can sweep, they can get back into first. Unlikely, but anything can happen in Baseball.

The could get much more dismal: You could be a Padres fan. To be fair, though, they suck only moderately these days.

I am having trouble believing that Mattingly's Dodgers are in last in the NL West. The way the Yanks are playing they might join them there. The Boss must be turning in his grave. Either sink some money into the team and get pitching - YOUNG pitchers or sell them to someone who will.

The Padres actually hit the .500 mark last night. Depending on the outcome of today's game with the Snakes, they could end up only three games out of first place. Who woulda thunk it just a month ago?

ON EDIT: Make that two games out of first place. They just swept a three-game series with the the Diamondbacks.

The local guys haven't done too badly of late either.

A lot better than I did when I started this thread, that's for sure. The were actually in second place in the NL West for a couple of days last week, a remarkable achievement considering their lamentable performance in April.

The Bucs look good this year. They stole Melancon from the Bosox and Martin was a great signing.

The Pirates are as good as anyone if their pitching holds up.

Gerritt Cole is a keeper.

I agree. Even the Dodgers are not out of the running. All it will take for them to be back in the race is one good winning streak.

Gerritt Cole is a keeper.I know. It's almost scary.

The Red Sox have to be disappointed with the way that trade worked out. Who knew Hanrahan would blow out his arm? I liked the guy (even though at the singing competition at the Dec 2011 Piratefest, well, Little Miss Field Day will still bitterly exclaim "He gave me an 8!!" -- he actually apologized to her later, since he wasn't taking it seriously, and hadn't meant to cost her a chance to win it). And I know they'd love to have "Shark" Melancon back.

This town is starting to go nutz. Even after last year's meltdown... people think we finally have a Winner, after 20 years. (LMFD is telling her friends, "Welcome to the Bandwagon, jump on! Just remember, I'm driving it!" Me, I'm keeping my fingers crossed... talk to me at the end of August.

Had a great time today at PNC Park with Ron W3WN, his wife, and Little Miss Field Day. Enjoyed meeting them. Bad part was Buco's lost to the Phills 6-4. First Pirates game I've been to in 3 years, we have to do it again sometime.
