View Full Version : The Darwin Committee Has A Lot Of Nominees This March.
First, the bumbling burglar.
Law enforcement officials in Redding, California, are asking for any information that could help lead to the arrest of a man who recently attempted to break into a grocery store on Airport Road.
To aid potential tipsters, investigators released CCTV footage of the burglary attempt (http://www.redding.com/news/2013/mar/27/video-captures-bumbling-burglary-suspect/) that may actually do more harm than good.
That's because anyone who watches it will be unable to quit laughing long enough to actually pick up the phone and call in their tip.

While at the Colorado Springs Mall last week, Joe Szklarski decided to try the "escalator helicopter" trick he saw someone do on YouTube.
And, as we all know, people attempting to recreate things they see on YouTube are always successful. At injuring themselves and/or others (http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/03/25/utah-man-killed-rope-swing/2018893/).
"So my friend broke the escalator at the mall," Joe's pal Andrew Nichols told 9NEWS (http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/2013/03/28/10/00/man-breaks-escalator-attempting-helicopter). "$3700 in fees."
Sure, that's a lot of money to an 18-year-old, but there's an upside: "It still is as funny as crap," said Andrew, who filmed the predictable failure, "and I've seen it so many times!"

Wrong subway platform? No problem right? Just cross the tracks. Mind the 600 V DC third rail...
HEY! There's a light at the end of the tunnel!
OOPS.
Early Tuesday evening, a teenager celebrating his 18th birthday was hit and killed by subway train (http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Teenager-Struck-Killed-Subway-Train-West-79-Street-Broadway-Number-2-Train-200139891.html) on Manhattan's Upper West Side as he and his two friends attempted to cross the tracks. One friend made it across while the other still hadn't left the other platform. According to the New York Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/teen-killed-subway-train-article-1.1299864?localLinksEnabled=false&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+nydnrss%2Fgossip%2Frush_mollo y+%28Gossip%2FRush+%26+Molloy%29&utm_content=Google+Reader), both surviving teens saw the train hit their friend, their knees buckling at the sight.
Witnesses described a gruesome scene.
"He got smacked by a 2 express train," said Bronx resident Anthony Escobar, 36. "He got fried and mangled."
…
"I heard the conductor yell, like give out a scream or a moan," said John D'Alessandro, who was in the first car of the train.
The subway came to a screeching halt and lost its power. Panicked passengers waited anxiously in the dark for more than an hour, as cops and firefighters tried to salvage the victim's body.
"I saw the arms, blood on the hands," said Leola Browder, 28. "Some people were upset and scared. Others were more worried about going where they had to go."
NBC New York reports (http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Teenager-Struck-Killed-Subway-Train-West-79-Street-Broadway-Number-2-Train-200139891.html) the teen and his friends, all from Long Island, were on their way back to Penn Station when they realized they were on the wrong platform. Instead of walking up the stairs to the other side, the teenagers attempted to cross the tracks, ignoring the shouts from other straphangers. At that same time a northbound 2 train was entering the station. The motorman spotted the teenagers and tried to slow the train, but by that time it was too late; the train clipped the 18 year old, who died at the scene.
Which do you think is the most eligible Darwin nominee of the month?

In case you needed yet another reason not to taunt animals 10 times larger than you, here you go: A man visiting Antelope Island State Park in Utah provoked a 1500 pound bison and the bison, being a bison, rammed the man into a nearby fence (http://www.ksl.com/?sid=24564347&nid=148&title=man-walks-away-from-bison-attack-unharmed&fm=home_page&s_cid=featured-1).
"This person is very, very, very lucky that he wasn't killed," said assistant park manager John Sullivan.
Sullivan said the man seemed uninjured immediately after the ordeal, and "other than being a little dusty ... embarrassed and shell-shocked," he was "none the worse for wear."
Yes, shell-shocked seems to be a good way to describe the feeling of surviving an attack from an animal that weighs almost a ton. Witnesses to the attack said the man went out of his way to attract the attention of the bison, which was on its way elsewhere.
"The [bison] had gone through the gate section that's located real close to where he got hit and looked like he was going to run off the field," Wayne Ebenroth of Boise, Idaho, said during an interview Wednesday on KSL NewsRadio. "He had to have done something to catch the [bison's] attention, because that's when he turned around and decided to pay him a visit."
Ebenroth is the same person who snapped the above photo. He started taking pictures when he noticed several people gathering near the bison and – thankfully for us all – didn't stop until after the attack. ""[The bison] just was not comfortable with how close he was hanging out with him," Ebenroth said.
Common Sense is anything but.

Only one gets the Darwin Award, the kid who challenged a train and lost, they don't award stupid survivors. That guy with the buffalo was VERY lucky it was a chain link fence and not brick.

At least when we used to cross the tracks we knew what the third rail was (600 VDC) and to avoid contact at all costs. We also has enough common sense to make sure that no trains were coming and, in a noisy location where sound or view may be blocks to play it safe and not go near the tracks.

Very dangerous. Get caught in any part of the mechanics and you could be killed.

"Huh ?? all he does is break the window...."
If that were the case it wouldn't be funny. Watch again, first he shows up with black pantyhose stuck on his head like overgrown Mouska Ears. He moves off camera, then returns with the pantyhose over his face like he should have in the first place. That's when he throws the rock and runs across the street stumbling all over himself not once but twice.

Don't laugh. I actually had one of those Mouska Ears hats when I was a child. That show was quite popular when I was 5 or 6. But what I really wish I still had was my Remco "Space Gun". Or my antique tin car that would sputter along the floor with flickering lights and blow "steam" out the radiator vent. I think I still have my old "Beany and Cecil" beany copter. That copter got stuck on my neighbors porch roof dozens of times. But since the houses in Brooklyn were so close together I was always able to retrieve it by pushing it off the roof froom my bedroom window with a stick.

Who's laughing? Every kid in the neighborhood belonged to the Micky Mouse Club and if you extrapolate the figures you'll see how big that club was. I had a number of toys including one for the bathtub, a plastic submarine you put a pellet in and it dove and surfaced like a real sub. Mom as usual figured it out, when the pellets were gone out came a can of baking powder. Play Doh never made it home, she figured that one out real quick and made it out of flour, salt, a little water and food coloring. Talk about old school, mama was a Pennsylvania Redneck.

Your mom should have been my mom, I hope by now you figured out how to use the chin strap and fly home from your neighbor's roof.

I tried to nominate the guy who crossed the subway tracks, but got an error message when I went to submit. I also got a mail error when I went to report that...

Yep, that was the Beany Copter. Each of the copters has a compartment where you could put a message inside and fly it over to your friend. I still have it somewhere buried in back of a closet..
I really wanted to be able to float and fly through the air like Peter Pan but at such a tender young age I didn't have access to the shrooms and blotters that would have made that feasible... Hi Hi.
In grade K our teacher used to make play doh the same way. Flour, water, salt and food colour.
I used to have a cheap dollar pocket watch with a real glow in the dark dial. Not the kind you have to charge up with a light but the kind that glows continually because it was painted with radium. I used to fall asleep with it right next to me listening to it tick and watching it glow softly in the dark room. In other words I irradiated myself to sleep. I still have it. It barely glows anymore but, put a Geiger Counter right near it and it clicks like mad.
Make that a scary video.
Footage posted to YouTube late last week shows a Brazilian woman being pulled out of the way of an oncoming train at quite literally the very last second.
According to local reports, the incident took place at the Corinthians-Itaquera Metro station in São Paulo. The woman had allegedly leaped onto the tracks in order to retrieve her cellphone (http://news.sky.com/story/1072398/train-near-miss-video-lucky-escape-in-brazil) after it slipped out of her hands.
Metro officials confirmed the March 26th incident to Globo's G1 portal (http://g1.globo.com/sao-paulo/noticia/2013/03/video-mostra-momento-em-que-mulher-e-resgatada-de-trilho-da-cptm.html), and said the woman was not injured.
They added that the São Paulo Metropolitan Trains Company's safety standards had been violated, but it remains unclear if the woman will be charged with a crime.
Her 15 minutes of fame almost became the last 15 seconds of her life.

"I used to have a cheap dollar pocket watch with a real glow in the dark dial."
I had one of those wind up alarm clocks with two gongs on top that could wake the dead, it also had a radium dial. I called it "Ticky". (;->) Of course a Geiger counter would sound off, the radium was still going strong long after the phosphor crapped out under constant bombardment. Same thing with old TV picture tubes, the electron guns still tested good but raster burn killed them.
That Brazilian woman isn't very smart, unless placed on a rail it wouldn't be touched. Wait until the train passes, the next one won't be along for at LEAST 10 minutes. Oh, that's not Sao Paulo the city, it's the city of Itaquera in the Federative Unit (state) of Sao Paulo.
