View Full Version : Keep the Island afloat - serious challenge issued!

I don't know how much anyone gives to the site, and I won't ever know, but Jeff says we have some heavy server expenses coming right at us. We're talking like the next 48 hours.

I'm going to kick in $100 right now. I will match, dollar for dollar, up to another $100 (hey, I'm not wealthy, you know), all donations made in the next 24 hours.

Yes, this is a gimmick to raise a few bucks to keep this place going. This could possibly put $300 or more in the kitty by this time tomorrow evening.

Don't tell what you gave, Jeff will give me a total at this time tomorrow, and I'll match it with another donation up to that $100 mark.

Here's your chance! If you hate me and my shenanigans, you have the chance to part me from some of my hard earned money. If you don't hate me, you still have the opportunity to help keep us online.

Every little bit helps, give what you can.

Jeff knows nothing of this, so when he reads it, he can confirm my initial donation shortly.

Thanks!
Luke

You're Irish?

No, I'm a 'muricun!

Truthfully, yes. I am of Dutch, German, and Irish descent. My grandmother on my Dad's side of the family was Irish, wish I could recall her maiden name. Grandpa was German. They both loved Irish coffee, for breakfast, lunch, dinner, well, you get the picture!

Silly bank insists I enter my name as it appears on my card... capitalists!

Damn, sorry to hear about that. I think we'll get a few takers. It's everyone's chance to inflict a little pain on me for a change! I can think of a couple of fellows 'round here that would dearly love that opportunity!

You guys rock! Thanks so much.

I've got a box of Kenwood TM25xx and 35xx rigs. All work, except for that well-known, %^$%#% obsolete Alps volume pot/on-off switch bit. They would make ideal packet rigs if the power connection was hard-wired and one of the several replacement pots I have on hand (minus switches, of course) was installed in place of the defective OEM control.

They're in various stages of disassembly but all there for the most part. I think I have service manuals for them too.

Here's what I'm going to do:

All the rigs, a mobile mount and manuals plus pots will be carefully boxed for shipment, at which time the box will be weighed and a shipping figure to the furthest point CONUS (probably Carl's doorstep) will be calculated. Then, the box of goodies will be listed in our For Sale section as a silent auction for one month with a starting price of the shipping amount.

Non-members can bid on it as well; contact info will be given in the listing.

Everything over the shipping figure goes towards Island upkeep. I don't care if it's $5.00 or $500.

Pics of the stuff will be taken prior to packing, and prior to sealing the box.

Have you considered moving all of the static images in vB, and the user images over to Amazon S3?

I did that for two client sites and it cut the bandwidth by over half--and opened up a shitload of space on the server drive.

If i could not afford it i would have been grovelling on the floor whining like a bitch why i could not support home base....;)
It is the second donation in 2 months, but i am used to put my money where my big socialist communist old hippy mouth is.
More people should do that... ;)
I was welcomed here with open arms, ( not so sure most still think the same about that) and i appreciate that.
Just ask if costs run up again, and i'll scrape the bottom of the purse a bit more.
It's only 40 Euro's...

My income as i calculated it now is between 31 and 36 K Dollars a year after all taxes etc are paid.
Costs rent, food, energy, insurance car and costs are 1400 a month leaving 1200 for saving up and unexpected bills etc
In 6 months time i saved up 3000 euro that way and bought another car so i'm not poor by my standards.
I have no debts, bils are all paid and this month i get my 8% holliday money extra for the last year that will go in the savings account as well.
So, 50 bucks well spend i think.
Now, where's my lapel pin? ;)
