According to an article published by the Washington Times (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/mar/6/report-super-fighter-will-get-pilots-shot-down/), the F-35A (http://theaviationist.com/2012/09/27/photo-an-f-35a-test-aircraft-flies-over-space-shuttle-endeavour-at-edwards-air-force-base/), the Conventional Take Off and Landing version of the Joint Strike Fighter, would be defeated in aerial combat because of its current shortcomings.

Grounded again with engine problems, over time, over budget, HMDS problems.

Considering the above mentioned F-35′s flaws (and all the shortcomings highlighted by the report…), the kinematic performance of the (recently, once again, grounded (http://theaviationist.com/2013/02/22/entire-f-35-fleet-grounded/)) stealth fighter, is the least of its problems.
Aviation journalist David Axe has published an insightful piece (http://www.offiziere.ch/?p=11420) about Lockheed Martin’s marketing efforts to keep up “the much-delayed, over-budget” F-35 Joint Strike Fighter reputation.

I read a book on this but I can't remember the title. This was predicted over a decade ago. JSF was too many things at one time trying to satisfy too many requirements with one plane. The F-111 Aardvark had teething problems too but was successful in the end. Hopefully this is the case here.

The Eurofighter is a generation or two removed from the JSF. Old technology here.

The Canadian government is on the hook to buy 65 copies of the F-35, at a price,to quote Carl Sagan to cost "Billions and Billiions" .....the high price for the plane and huge cost over runs threatens to put the government of Stephen Harper into the crapper ........cest le vie!

We were in line to buy some as well, one test plane cannot fly for a year till things are sorted out, and the decission to buy them has been put on hold.

The F-111 Aardvark had teething problems too but was successful in the end.
As I understand it the F-111 had a composite skin which was prone to destruction from jungle rot, and which was a PITA for its maintenance crews to service.

It also wasn't very stealthy. Nap-of-the-earth TFR facilitated low-level penetration missions, but why jeopardize an air crew over something which could be accomplished better with a few cruise missiles?

Despite the "F" designation, the 'Vark was never really intended to be a fighter. Its primary role was always that of ground support and precision munitions delivery. But copying its swing-wing design probably cost Ivan untold defense-budget rubles, so the program wasn't a total wash.

I'm curious: Isn't the F16 good enough? It's still one of the most advanced fighter systems on the planet, and last I checked, still quite effective in war time. So much so, we give them away to Israel. We wouldn't give Israel crap, would we?

We use F 16's upgraded to the last notch, they were good enough to shoot down a few Russian made Mig 25's over bosnia.
Most of them are ageing now, the frame has served lots of flying hours.

The F22 isn't a "strike fighter". Two totally different mission profiles.

Schools? Healthcare? Infrastructure? They can spare a couple of these toys to help get those things in order, right? If they did that, i wouldnt really have a complaint.
