Mr. Terry L. VanVolkenburg of Cocoa, FL, has been issued a Notice of Apparent Liability for Forfeiture amounting to $25,000, for causing interference to licensed commnications with the county jail in Sharpes, FL.

Oops.

He was allegedly using an Alinco DJ-C5 on 465.3 MHz, the jail frequency allegedly at 300 mW.

And this... induhvidual... is, or was, KC5RF.

He was just doing phone patches from the guards to the folks back home.

Maybe he was messing with the guards. Making it sound like or making the guards think they were hearing prisoners talk about breaking out and drug deals.
I remember when businesses like Walmart and some chain restaurants were using FRS radios to conduct business. Kids in the neighborhood would always mess with them.

Interesting that a licensed Amateur doesn't know the rules...

03/05/2013 On March 1, the FCC issued a Notice of Apparent Liability for Forfeiture (NAL (http://transition.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Business/2013/db0301/DA-13-305A1.pdf)) in the amount of $25,000 to Terry L. VanVolkenburg, KC5RF, of Cocoa, Florida. The FCC alleged that VanVolkenburg “apparently willfully and repeatedly violated Sections 301 and 333 of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended…, by operating a radio transmitter without a license on…465.300 MHz and for interfering with licensed communications.” VanVolkenburg holds an Advanced class license.
In September 2012, FCC agents in the Tampa Office received a complaint of radio interference from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Department. The Sheriff’s Department -- licensee of call sign WQCW384 -- utilizes a wireless radio communications system in the county jail in Sharpes, Florida. According to the complaint, the Sheriff’s Department experienced intermittent interference to its radio communications in the jail on the frequency 456.300 MHz on at least 14 days during September and October 2012. According to the NAL, audio recordings taken by the Sheriff’s Department suggest “that a male individual interfered with the prison’s communications by transmitting vulgar language, sound effects, previously recorded prison communications and threats to prison officials over the prison’s communications system.”
On October 28, the agents used direction finding techniques and traced the source of the interfering radio frequency transmissions on 465.300 MHz to a residence in Cocoa, Florida. The frequency 465.300 MHz is allocated to public safety stations; as an Advanced class licensee, VanVolkenburg does not hold privileges to operate in this portion of the spectrum. In addition, the FCC’s records showed that no authorization was issued to anyone to operate a private land mobile station at this location.

As Forrest said, "stupid is as stupid does..."

Advanced Class. There is just one more piece of evidence added to the humongous pile of old time Extra's and Generals that regularly make horse asses out of themselves. Most of the QRM and jamming on 75m comes from these clowns.

But never forget, it's those no code idiots coming on board now that are all the trouble... :snooty:

Please merge with this thread. (https://forums.hamisland.net/showthread.php/25023-Only-a-25-000-Fine?p=519105#post519105) I was unaware (despite doing a search) that this was already posted.

seeing how the government is strapped for cash, one would think the fcc would do just that.

That aside...

Just because someone can pass an exam... which might mean that they're very good at memorizing questions and correct answers, and nothing more than that, which means just what I'm implying, a lack of comprehension... doesn't mean that they should be allowed anywhere near a radio.

I don't care what their license class is or was, how long they were licensed, whether or not they had to pass a code test or at what speed, or whether or not they took their exam before the FCC or volunteers.

Idjits are still idjits. Or as my family would put it: Once a schmuck, always a schmuck, and often a putz to boot.

I remember when the Jack in the Box drive thru window on Gun Hill Road, The Bronx used to use CB Channel 23. We had a ball with them. Didn't help that they used to mess up my order all the time.

Are we really sure that's him and not someone else that just created an account using his callsign?

I guess since your an admin I can ask, does that IP address that this person is using even come back to Florida?

How long they remain a member in good standing is solely up to them.

I'll agree with ya on that one, I have nothing against the guy.. I just wasn't sure if it was really him or someone else screwing around.. Hopefully we'll get to hear the other side of the story too...

Good to know :)
I wasn't aware of that..

Glad to see that stuff is checked out first...

I used to live in Cocoa Beach, actually right on A1A across the street from Patrick AFB and down the road from Ron Jons surf shop... I'd kinda like to hear this guy's side of things if he'd actually reply with something more than smartass comments... Although I don't expect much more than that..

We had some on 5, some on 8 but they were chased by ALERT because of splashing on channel 9 (ALERTs fault actually) and some were with us on 3. The east Bronx was on 20 and 21. I doubt if you could reach the East Bronx from West Harlem these days.

Yeah, especially THESE disgusting things. In my feckless youth I knew a non smoker who used them to ditch a date gone bad. He kept them above the sun visor in his car and the resulting atomic stench rather like skunk, death, vomit and pig poop on steroids sent the date from hell back home with bells on.
