Unless something changes drastically, 10m is going to be a disappointment for this contest.... again. I'm not finding much on the band, and what I can find is pretty weak.

I suspect that 15m and the bands below are going to bear the most "fruit".

Yesterday i worked on 10 with VU2XO 5/9 signals 200 watts into the Imax 2000.
Band was fully open today MUF at 35 MHz.
Day before yesterday on 10 PU2LEP
All from the Netherlands.
Just on 160 9A2NA 200 watt into the inverted L 5/9 + signals.

And, right on cue, a geomagnetic storm.

VU is a polar path from here and probably twice the distance.

Not here. Flux was only 109 this morning. It needs to be another 10 points higher before 10m opens up to EU and AF.

All find and good, but right now, the numbers are getting worse. SFI:106 A:7 K:4

As my contacts prove, the band might not be open all the time but you can count oon it opening up with good distances now and then, the normal way 10 works nowadays.
I just keep an eye on the http://digisonde.oma.be/cgi-bin/latest.exe? ionogram, and pop over if th MUF goes up.
Mostly i'm getting a good contact there.
Just running 200 watts from the FT 2000-D and the vertical or OCF Fritzel FD-4 there, mostly never run the amp.
9A5CW on 160 at the moment, 9/20.

I made like 1.7 million points, enough to win hudson division but I think 15th place USA.

http://pileup.ru/search.php?call=N2RJ&year=2013&contest_short=arrldx_ssbNow, that's a very interesting web site. I didn't know that anyone was 'harvesting' data from the 3830 Reflector and processing it that way.

It's also incomplete... the site's showing M/S & M/2 DX & W/VE for High Power but not for Low Power. (Not that you'll find me there either way, since I don't submit data to 3830 anymore. But that's another story). Interesting, especially since the LP claimed scores are shown for 2012. Hmmm.

Well, it is a Russian site.

I don't believe anything Li'l Rupert says anyway.

I discovered it a few years ago. It is better than manually watching 3830. Valery has been improving and adding features, and it is turning out to be very good.

I believe the official WPX and CQWW results site now copies the same format. However I was told by Randy that he wrote the code himself for that.

I want to write something like that for my contest club.

I have my own opinion about Randy. Suffice to say that he has deeply disappointed me... telling me it's his way or the highway, so to speak, and then harrasses me for logs after I've chosen "highway".

But you've probably picked that up from the CQ Contest reflector. Of course, my days there are now numbered. Don't know what the number is yet, but since I've been told by K1AR that I'm not welcome and barely tolerated, it's probably a small one.

Strange, too. Seems just the other day, I was being told I was a young kid who ought to learn from his elders, even if I'd been contesting longer than my "elders" had been licensed. Now I'm a curmudgeon, who's holding back progress, just because I believe in one's personal privacy rights. Go figure.

Yeah the whole open logs thing... I don't mind it at all, but I can see how someone can be upset about it.

That said, they've been useless to me for improving score. What has been useful to me is simply more BIC (butt in chair) time and holding down the fort (holding my run frequency). Getting better at both but I still have a ways to go.

W3WN
03-27-2013, 09:03 AM
Yeah, that. But perchance that should be a thread of it's own, one of these days.

And you're right... the most important factor is BIC time. That's one area I need to improve. That and... well, I've probably gone just about as far as I can, running barefoot with verticals and wires. Trying to hold a run frequency is tough; it's too easy for one of the Big Guns to plop right on me and take a frequency away, as has happened to me in the past with a certain M/M within driving distance. I need to either get a beam up (preferred) or buy an amp (which won't happen until I build the new shack -- electrical issues).

But... that's my problem, and it will be solved soon enough. Meanwhile, I just trundle along...
