Those of you with iPhones who've experienced a sudden spike in bandwith useage, and a sudden draining of the batteries, may find this of interest:

Short story, for those who don't want to follow the link: The blogger eventually tracked down a bug in prior versions of iOS, involving Exchange accounts and Push technology, that was causing the phone to continually try to resync calendars.

Further down in the comments, it also appears that if there is a calendar entry that's not sync'ing correctly, or an unsent email, the phone keeps trying to reconnect & goes into a near-endless loop of fail/retry.

Rather old story. Apple has already published a workaround and promised a fix in the next iOS update.

Update: Apple just released iOS 6.1.2, which addresses the Exchange problem.
