ROME — Pope Benedict XVI (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/b/benedict_xvi/index.html?inline=nyt-per), the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger who took office in 2005 following the death of his predecessor, said on Monday that he will resign on Feb. 28, the first pope to do so in six centuries.

A profoundly conservative figure whose papacy was overshadowed by sexual abuse scandals in the Roman Catholic Church (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/r/roman_catholic_church/index.html?inline=nyt-org), the pope, 85, said that after examining his conscience “before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise” of his position as head of the world’s Roman Catholics.

That is the only reason that I have any concerns. I often wonder why they would install a 78 year old man in that office while knowing the predictions of St. Malachy and Revelations.

I'm certain that IZE will have something snarky to say about it, but these predictions were made hundreds of years ago and have withstood the test of time.

VATICAN (The Borowitz Report)—Pope Benedict XVI stunned the world for the second time in twenty-four hours today by announcing his decision to come out of retirement.

“I thought I was getting too old for this,” the Pope explained via his Twitter account, “but I’ve still got plenty left in the tank.”

The Pope’s abrupt unretirement left many fans wondering if his original decision was little more than a publicity stunt, but according to one Vatican source, “The situation was a lot more complicated than people know.”

“The Vatican doesn’t make resigning your job as Pope an easy thing to do,” the source said. “In his exit interview, they told him he would have to agree not to sign with another organized religion for three years. Plus, he was going to have to give his 1.5 million Twitter followers back to the Church. The Twitter thing was the deal-breaker.”

For his part, the newly unretired Pope took to his Twitter feed to announce his return in a nonchalant way: “So it turns out I’m not infallible. #FTW.”

(From The Borowitz Report (http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/borowitzreport/2013/02/popes-decision-to-come-out-of-retirement-stirs-controversy.html?mbid=nl_Borowitz%20%2879%29))

"According to the prophecy, the current Pope may be the second last Pope Gloria Olivæ ("Glory of the Olives"). However, it should be noted that some commentators over the centuries have pointed out that there is nothing that says there will be no popes between Gloria Olivæ and Petrus Romanus. It may be that there will be a long line of popes between them!"

I'll go with that, if we're that close to the last Pope we have a time frame. Saint Malachy named the last Pope which in itself gives a time frame. Trouble with that idea is only God knows the day and the hour, he's not about to spoil the surprise or his son could have answered the question put before him. No thanks, I'll set that prophesy aside.

Pope Carlo will think the real job sucks. They only pay like $200M a year. That isn't even considered income as that would be subject to taxes and tithing. Ergo, the Pope only gets a billion dollars every 5 years to blow personally the way he sees fit.

Ergo, the Pope only gets a billion dollars every 5 years to spend on blow the way he sees fit. There, that's better.

Vin Mariani was a tonic and patent medicine created circa 1863 by Angelo Mariani, a French chemist who became intrigued with coca and its economic potential after reading Paolo Mantegazza’s paper on coca's effects. In 1863, Mariani started marketing a wine called Vin Tonique Mariani which was made from Bordeaux wine treated with coca leaves. Vin Mariani was very popular in its day, Pope Leo XIII and later Pope Saint Pius X were both Vin Mariani drinkers. Pope Leo awarded a Vatican gold medal to the wine, and also appeared on a poster endorsing it.

Abortion and euthanasia

Cardinal Bergoglio has invited his clergy and laity to oppose both abortion and euthanasia.
Homosexuality

He has affirmed church teaching on homosexuality, though he teaches the importance of respecting individuals who are homosexual. He strongly opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine Government to allow same-sex marriage, calling it a "real and dire anthropological throwback". In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires, he wrote: "Let's not be naive, we're not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God." He has also insisted that adoption by homosexuals is a form of discrimination against children. This position received a rebuke from Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who said the church's tone was reminiscent of "medieval times and the Inquisition".

So, looks like more of the same ol' same ol'. They shoulda chosen me.

Take a peek at the new pope.

Whoever it may be.

VATICAN CITY — Cardinals elected a new pope to lead the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics on Wednesday, overcoming deep divisions to select the 266th pope in a remarkably fast conclave.

Tens of thousands of people who braved cold rain to watch the smokestack atop the Sistine Chapel jumped in joy when white smoke poured out, many shouting “Habemus Papam!” or “We have a pope!” — as the bells of St. Peter’s Basilica and churches across Rome tolled, signaling a pontiff had been chosen.

Jehovah destroyed Sodom not because of "teh gays"... It was due to the utter evil, evidence by their lack of hospitality to Jehovah's messengers. Homosexuality is on par with eating shellfish, according to the OT. Jesus never spoke a word on it in the NT, only Paul did. And, Paul never met Jesus, and in fact converted about 60 years or so after Jesus died. And, Paul had some really weird beliefs on a lot of topics.

You just love to contradict me but in doing so reenforce what I say so more power to you. Case in point, it was the WAY they showed much MORE than a simple lack of hospitality which is WHY the messengers struck them blind. You have an interesting way of showing your lack of understanding what you read, where do you think the word SODOMy comes from? Perhaps if the scene was in the other of the twin cities it would be GOMORRAHy? (sarcasm) Funny how you call a lack of hospitality "utter evil" when everybody else calls it rude. Homosexuality is only a part of that utter evil in a city where anything goes, utter lawlessness.

"Jesus never spoke a word on it in the NT, only Paul did. And, Paul never met Jesus, and in fact converted about 60 years or so after Jesus died. And, Paul had some really weird beliefs on a lot of topics."

What has the New Testament have to do with anything? Why do you consider Paul's beliefs weird? Since you brought it up perhaps you could pick a few and explain the why of each one. A blanket statement says nothing, specifics may prove interesting since you piqued my curiosity. I have a suspicion it's because later editors of the Revised Standard Edition changed Paul's epistles to make them less favorable toward women in positions of authority. We shall see, if you're forthcoming.

Oh, speaking of a lack of hospitality, remember how when Billy Martin was manager of the Yankees he'd kick dirt on the umpire? When Jesus sent his Apostles out to preach the gospel he instructed them that if they were not well received they should kick the dust from their sandals and move on. It's a little known extreme Jewish insult in case you (collectively out there) didn't know, Billy's way of saying 4Q.
