This guy can't be serious: eBay Headphone Amplifier (http://www.ebay.com/itm/12V-Battery-Tube-Headphones-Amplifier-For-Sennheiser-HD-580-600-650-Beyer-DT880-/330855211430)

He says in one of the questions that he'll take offers. Shoot, it oughta be worth a buck for the parts as long as it ships for free.

The lack of a volume knob would be a deal breaker here. I think this would be better:

If you have to attenuate the input why do you need an amplifier? Tubes are royalty alright, he makes that perfectly clear.

e-Bay, an amusement park where you don't have to pay admission (unless you're insanely stupid).

It appears he got one offer...and it was declined. I bet it was Doug with that $1 bid.

I think he is truly out of touch with how much things are worth, judging by his other auctions...like the $80,000 mic pre. Avalon? Focusrite? Millenia? Nope...just some shit in a box. 80 grand!

almost nothing to reduce the quality of your source..."

Pfffft! That amplifier sucks. Here, I have some wire I want to sell you. With my new, patented Stranded Copper Amplifier, there's not even any TUBES to distort your audio. A steal at only $165,000.

I would pay that much if it was an oxygen free copper wire amplifier!

There are two distinct possibilities.

One is that due to a translation error (you did notice that the listed item is in Greece?), he has miscalculated the true $ value -- by a factor of at least 100 if not 1000.

The other is that he is a certified whacko. (I know that that's the correct technical term, I heard it from Dr. Chase Meridian.)

I just think he builds these basic devices, and maybe they basically work, but he thinks waaaaay too highly of himself and his work and doesnt know how to set a realistic price. Some are tinkerers, others are good at business...he absolutely sucks at the business part.

BTW, I don't know if any of you noticed, but that thing is made using the cheapest Shat-Shack components they sell. It uses friggin' RCA jacks for input, and the cheapest ones they sell, with the plastic insets at that. Same with the power jack and plug. And it looks to use 24 gauge wire, plus the solder job is one of the worst I've seen for something so simple. What a piece of crap. It'd be one thing to make something like that and build it solid like an M1 tank with quality parts and solid wiring, but this thing was built by someone barely past a 50-in-1 experimenter kit.

Oh, i noticed. Thats why i believe he thinks too highly of himself. Just like the guy who records a shitty song about Michael Jordan and thinks "this is IT!! I am going to get a record deal now! What color Benz do i want?".

This.

There's an amazing amount of extraordinarily priced crap in the audio market, and we all know it. Real musicians know better, though, but uber rich folks don't. My guess is that he's looking to score big off the ignorance of some rich trust-funder who is looking for bragging rights. Wish him good luck wid that. DIY version of the lotto, eh?

Bump.

From the same guy, a microphone pre-amp (http://www.ebay.com/itm/EMI-RS61-Electron-Tube-Microphone-Preamplifier-V72-U47-Beatles-/330870294078?_trksid=p2047675.m1985&_trkparms=aid%3D444000%26algo%3DSOI.CURRENT%26ao%3 D1%26asc%3D13%26meid%3D5431720208523179135%26pid%3 D100012%26prg%3D1014%26rk%3D4%26sd%3D330855211430% 26)—a steal at only $39,000! The description boasts that the device contains no electrolytic capacitors (despite the fact that a photo about halfway down the page shows two clearly marked as such), only oil-filled paper caps.

Yessir, this man is obviously a goddamned electronical genius. Or not.

Fewgawdsakes the knee in the price performance curve is much, much, much lower in price.

http://www.jdslabs.com/storecat.php?fetchcat=1

With the $60 kit you can do the Altoids box thing:
http://www.jdslabs.com/images/1/1600/cMoyIsometric.pngI've considered getting a headphone amp. A buddy of mine uses top of the line Etymotic earbuds with an amp. Amazing sound, about $300. Then he added a good headphone amplifier for another $200, don't recall the brand. This setup sounds amazing. A little pricey.

I use a higher end Sony earbud set, a discontinued model that went on sale for $60. They sounded almost as good when plugged into that amp. Amusingly, many higher end earbuds need a burn in time. Run audio at a strong volume for about 24 hours before using. Seriously.

My hearing is so effed up from years of abuse that I don't even worry about audiophool stuff anymore. I suspect that most "golden ear" types couldn't stand up to a double-blind test in any case.

Mine are still OK. And the tinnitus from the chemo is almost gone.

Mind you, I EQ in a bit more highs than I used to.
