It's not LINUX, it's Linux. It's not an acronym.

I've dabbled with Ubuntu, but when the shit hits the fan, I hate changing text editors.

General purpose...

I was thinking that a second install, another hard drive, that will configure itself on the computer it is on. Let me explain.. Suppose I want to run a particular variant of Linux on my Dell XPS system, and another occasion, pull the hard drive from the XPS and stick it in the Intel computer - will it configure itself? Since both computers have trayless drive kits, swapping drives (powered off, of course) is easily done.

Nice thing about these removable drive bays, I can use any OS without disturbing other setups. I can explore software and OS's. Open Solaris will be another OS to try. Play around with multi boot software, maybe run several OS's from same HD.

What's your primary OS?

If Windows, install VMPlayer and Ubuntu within that.

Thought you were the VM guru here, Paul?

For general purpose use I use Fedora,, But keep in mind it has a rapid update cycle and I usually fall way behind between updates. I like Fedora because it tends to be on the bleeding edge and tends to work with a lot of hardware. So far it has worked with all the general hardware I have thrown at it.

so you need bleeding-edge operating systems *why?* if you're not going to keep current ...

I've been using Linux Mint for my laptop. For general purpose desktop/laptop use it' either Mint, Ubuntu or straight-up Debian.

For general purpose, on a moderately recent machine, I'd recommend Linux Mint. The only thing I don't like about LM is no rolling upgrades.

Because when I do upgrade I get all the new bleeding edge stuff.

To key into my suggestion: I only suggest LM due to the extra codecs you get, to make the hardware "shine" :)

What is the purpose of the Machine? To place Jodie Foster into a space/time warp, so that she can walk a beach on Alpha Centauri with David Morse.

But what's that got to do with Linux?

But, to explore! To do it, for the sake of doing it!

It's not LINUX, it's Linux. It's not an acronym.

Neither is UNIX! UNIX was a play on MULTICS, which was an acronym.

However, UNIX is the proper trademark capitalization :)
