I got a new band for Christmas. Never have been on 222MHz before.

http://i.ebayimg.com/t/TYT-TH-UVF9-Dual-Band-Handheld-Radio-2M-220mhz-136-174-220-260-MHz-/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/$T2eC16V,!zQE9s3ssV,OBQb3emubTw~~60_12.JPG

I hope I can find some nice contacts on there. It has 2M as well. But the radio is light. It comes with a ducky, Li-Ion, car and house chargers, drivers, USB cable, and belt clip.

So I programmed it for 222. Try to use it mobile and do something different. I have made calls on some repeaters, but no contacts yet.

The antenna is the female SMA like the Japanese rigs. That is cool. :-D

223.640 is a popular simplex frequency for the 'fester crowd. We also checked out the new dual band (222/902) HT at Dayton this year and if we didn't already own a few 1.25M rigs one of those would have come home with us.

Nice present, Jerry!

222 was pretty hot around here several years ago, and I ran 25W mobile. But the popularity kinda died off a bit. Now I only use it with the handhelds when in range of a repeater, or simplex with friends & family when out camping. It is a fun band, and no problem finding a clear spot.

Thanks. I think I will like it a lot. Lots of repeaters around and I have met a few hams who operate above 10M only on 222MHz.

I like 220MHz a lot—less interference than on 2m, better propagation than 70cm. Unfortunately, not all that many hams have the necessary equipment.

Boy, that's an understatement.

LOL. Looks like a FUNC button, but that may be fun.

It's a shame 220 isn't available world-wide. I think that has a lot to due with lack of equipment. Hams being cheap generally buy used.

It has more to due with the fact it's not a world-wide band. Limited market = low volume = higher prices = not many sold.

I think that's what I just said

I think you're both wrong. I think it is because there is limited permission throughout the world to operate amateur radio on those frequencies. And since there is this limitation to who will buy them the prices are not normally cheap.

Do you have peer-reviewed source for that?

Only good if they're LAF grafs.

I think it's also because back in the 90's they lopped off a portion of 220 and sold it to business users. Many feared the entire band was going to go the same way and so popularity waned.

I ALMOST bought one of those at Pacificon last October. I SHOULD have!!! They look like a really nice little radio, and it was like $80 or so for it. Been kicking myself ever since that I passed on it.

222 is a very busy band here in SoCal. Especially here in Crest where our Radio club has a new repeater on that band.

I like radio. Never got on 220. Never caught a qso on 220 on the scanner either.

Believe it or not, Sears used to sell this rig along with its 2M counterpart...back in the CB boom days.

I forgot the model number but that's my old Icom with a Sears name on it. Rather user unfriendly beast with the left 4 position switch and concentric knobs being like a combination lock to set the frequency.
