View Full Version : Tis the season...To use staple guns

This year, like every year, the XYL has me put up Christmas lights around the house. In the past, I have been fairly successful aiming the staple gun just right to staple the light wires, catching them below where the staple stops. Well, you can imagine that this takes a lot of skill.

The last couple of years, I have been using duct tape to use as string hangars and stapling the tape tab to the eves of the house. It's easy and fast to put up. No more careful aiming to keep from stapling to the 110V wires.

Wallah Wallah Voila.

Anyone else have any holiday tips?

There are hangers available to "clip" the lights onto the eaves & gutters. I bought a box of 300 from Depot a few years back, and they hold up pretty well.

Interesting. I've got to look for these. Do you remember what they were called? Holiday Light Clips, or something else?

Back when we were into the lights-on-the-house deal, we put "permanent" hooks up to hold the lights. Done right, you can take the lights down without a ladder.

Wow. Well, I should try to find these things at Menards.

Ron, This year I tried bourbon in my nog. Great taste. But, I am a bourbon kinda guy.

No, but I'll check when I get home.

Too bad you're a bit out of the ways; I haven't used them in a couple of years. After we had the rain gutters replaced following Snowmaggedon, I've refused to try and hang lights from the gutters (ice built up on the lights, and the extra weight was part of the reason the old ones tore off the house)

But Depot has or had them. As does/did Lowes and Wally World.

I used similar plastic clips for the first time this year. They screw into one of those extension poles you use for paint rollers. You screw one on, clip to the light string, then reach up and clip it to your gutter. Don't need a ladder to put them up or take them down.

As I recall, these can be removed with a painter's pole, too (remove without a ladder). Uh, assuming they're not too high up.

We put the lights in places where there is no trough. So we are needing some method of getting clips up that do not require troughs. The permanent hooks that Rob is talking about sounds interesting. I need to get a picture of the house.

Many of the lights are where no troughs are needed. We still have no snow here. This is from 2 years ago.

Ha, that is funny that you have to go back in time to find pictures of X-mas lights with snow. I think it snowed on X-mas here the year I moved in (15 years ago). I don't dream of a White Christmas anymore, but I have had several Alzheimer flashbacks.

We used cup hooks, Jerry. Like these: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202183439/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=cup+hooks&storeId=10051#.UNIV9W_AcZ4

Just screwed them into the wood, and they stay in place for eons. If you're using the standard two-wire lights, you can string them up with the hook holding just one wire and the friction of the other wire kind of keeps everything in place. Never had a problem with wind (and we get a lot of wind). When they're ready to come down, you can generally unhook them with a painter's pole or similar implement and leave the ladder in the garage.

Come to think of it, I think I attached a bent coat-hanger to the end of the pole with duct tape (bent in the shape of a hook). Everyone wants to put lights up; nobody wants to take 'em down, so easy removal is a big plus.

Oh. Okay. Well under the lower part of the roof, we do have hooks like that which we use. I can reach those without a ladder. But up higher, it is not so easy to reach. With AGW in full force now, I should use those all over again because they would work well, but in years past, we get 60MPH winds that will blow the string off the hooks and onto the roof below. With that issue I had to leave the mess until there was a day I could get back onto the roof because of ice and snow.

EDIT: With the duct tape, there is no issues with wind and I can pull the lights down without getting on the ladder again by just pulling them down. My village is strict about getting lights down after the season is over.

In my opinion American whiskies are the best in the world, and, in particular, good bourbon is the best of the best.

What I don't care too much for are the Scotch and Irish whiskies. I am not putting them down I just find I much prefer American whiskies. One thing this country really does good is making whiskey. And rightfully so. Americans have been making great whiskies for many a century and they really got it down right.

As far as bourbon in egg nog, I'll pass. I prefer to enjoy the flavour of a good bourbon by itself. And a good egg nog is the same. I prefer to drink it without rum or whiskey.

Totally agree with bourbon being the best whiskey.

Stapling wires to the house reminded of the guy that stapled his balls together. He heard if you can't lick em, join em.
