"2FAST" isn't a valid U.S. amateur call.

I used to have one when GA offered them at a discount from the regular tags. They gave HAMS a discount because of all the great emergency services we provide.

THEN, someone in the gub'mit figgered out that emergency ham = whacker, so now we have to pay the $45 vanity fee for the plate, so I'm no longer sporting the amateur radio license plate.

No vanity fee here in CA. You do have to pay $24 for the plate but there's no additional charge after that.

Pennsylvannia also used to have a very low cost for a Ham call license plate. Then PennDOT did an overhaul ("streamlining" -- hah! Efficiency in PennDOT? Again, I say Hah!) of how they handled ALL vanity/specialty plates, including the ones for school alumni, charitable causes, etc. At that time, Ham plates got lumped in with everything, and got (and get) charged the same as the other vanity plates.

Completely Fucking COOL, Dr.! Are those yours?

I have over 600 ham radio plates which I am going to put on display here in the new QTH BECAUSE I NOW HAVE ROOM TO DISPLAY THEM!!!

I'm currently working on a getting out of district plates for each state, well the project has been suspended for a while due to the job situation, but I do have a complete set of out of district plates for Virginia. The first goal is to get one out district plate for every state. I'm about half there now.

I have to talk to N3UE. He had a Ham call plate -- on his motorcycle. Very rare item in PA! I'll see if he still has it, and if so, if there's a picture of it somewhere.

Too bad you didn't get one of the pre-1974 steel blue plates. They hold up better.

Yours still rocks.

Ok, here we go with some oddities:

8277

This is real, even though it looks fake.

8278

Very clean 55 Canal Zone plate. The Zone used the KZ5 prefix. I'll bet there are still a few ex-Zonians that kept their callsigns after 1978.

8279

This one doesn't really count, as it's a vanity plate, not a ham plate. VK8TD is a real call.

Sarah took my camera today, but when she returns I'll post a pic of all of my own personal old call plates.

I'm sure you're waiting in antici.......pation.

< snip >I don't recall hearing of anyone who did so. Even though the Canal Zone was turned over in September 1979, and the current call assignment system went into effect in March 1978. Now I'd have to check a database from the "pre-Vanity" era to be certain, but I believe all of the Canal Zone KZ5xx calls were discontinued on or before the actual turnover.

That said, I have heard that a few ex-CZ hams did get their KZ5xx calls back under Vanity.

I had to give up the FF plates a few years ago when I 'retired.' Just have regular old amateur radio plates on the truck now.

Sadly, no. I only have pictures. But I do have about 500 decent pics of ham plates. If I ever get time, my idea is to make a montage (or would it be a collage?) of all 500 plate images in shape of the continental U.S., then send it over to "Ham Nation" (my favorite ham-related video podcast). They might get a kick out of it.

Its sad to see classics rusting away in the woods. Aircraft boneyards are sad and fascinating at the same time for the same reason.

I snapped that pic of the Buick last June just outside of Baraboo, WI. It sits next to an old Seagrave fire engine at Docto Evermore's Forevertron Park. You can't really see it, but at the :30 mark it would be just to the left of the yellow bus. http://youtu.be/wXu4R-ZlbAw

If it's a fairly new vehicle, a good rule of thumb is the equivalent of one or two of monthly car payments. I don't understand why, in this state, yearly vehicle registration has to be higher than giraffe nuts. I'll bet some people pay less for annual property tax.

Registration and plates used to be dirt cheap in AZ years ago. California on the other hand has always been expensive as hell. Back in the 1960's and 70's a lot of cheapskates in California would buy their new cars in AZ so they could cruize for a year on cheap plates. Some even used addresses of friends and relatives to renew to get out of paying the high prices in CA. I guess Arizona got wise and jacked up the cost of registration to keep the deadbeats out and make a lot of money.

W7XF
01-02-2013, 06:47 PM
Arizona is still cheaper than the People's Repulsive of CaliFAILia...as well as (as long as you're not in Maricopa, Pima, parts of Pinal Counties) up to a 5 YEAR registration. Also, many that have modified their cars (hot rodders take note) use AZ tags to get around CaliFAILia's emissions inspection. Just got the e-mail today: $200 for 1 year on my 2007 Dodge pickup. (I have to get the emissions inspection next year). Where AZ gets you when you buy a car here is sales tax.... inside city limits here it's 9.1%....some cities it's above 10%!!! Outside city limits it's 2-3% lower...but the car dealers know that and will use that 2-3% as more dealer markup.
