Gold please. Thank you.

Other things on my bucket list:

1. Finish writing a full-length adult book and get it published.
2. Travel all of Europe.
3. Visit Thailand again.
4. Build a completely self-sufficient, solar and wind powered, wood-heated cob house and live my final days out in it.

I have writing a book as one of my bucket list items, a techno-thriller is my plan :)
My wife and I want to go to Australia then our traveling days will be over.
Finally, I want to move to North Carolina (Albemarle Sound waterfront home) to spend my days fishing.

Visit Italy and drive a classic Ferrari around il Autodromo Nazionale Monza
Put a decent antenna with some actual gain up on a tower and work the Indian subcontinent
Get the heck outta southern California before I die
F*ck the hell outta Zooey Deschanel. Yeah, I know, she's younger than my stepdaughter but what the hell--this is just a bucket list.

1) Drive the entire length of Interstate 90 out to Seattle, then "take a right" onto the Alcan highway and go clear into Anchorage. I did the entire length of I-10 (L.A. to Jacksonville) in 52 1/2 hrs, driving a '68 Ford Torino GT. This trip, I'll take my time...

2) Build another airplane, and fly on every nice summer weekend...

3) Obtain enough country property, with a Victorian style farm house, to accomodate a 1/4 wave Blaw-Knox diamond tower replica for 160 meters (painted and lit, of course)... Also big enough for a 1000' grass runway for the plane.

4) Do a frame off, ground up restoration on my '66 Pontiac LeMans converdible and my '80 Olds Tornado ( my Grandfathers Oldsmibile )... See #1

82598260

5) Live out my last days in peace, with peace of mind, enjoying my Grand children.

6) Work Western Australia, and to ice the cake... Antarctica...

7) ...And if all that happens, why, I think I'd look quite good cruising the Autobahn in Germany... In the "Baby Goat"!!

I dont know. Have not thought much about it.

Maybe I am easy or maybe it is due to my age. Hell maybe I am just overly traditional in some senses.

Get married (done)
Have kids
Cliche house with all the trimmings
I would love to have a room dedicated to my ham hobby, like a shack on crack.
A library and a study

Maybe, after I get some of the more common things out of the way I will be more creative.

Why do a frame-off on the goat? It looks pretty clean as is. Nice car.

I don't know if you read Hemmings Classic Cars magazine, but untouched, unrestored original cars seem to be the wave. They usually have one per issue. Yours looks like it would qualify.

Before I moved to Illinois, I had a 64 Chevrolet Biscayne wagon that was in really good original condition. No rips in the seats or headliner, 327 with optional power steering and NO cancer. California car. Needless to say that sold really fast.

I have a 1963 Rambler Classic 660 in storage in Northern California that I'm going to bring out here when the snow goes away. It's an all original car with only 45K on the odometer. Again, no rust and the thing runs. It was owned by a little old man in Klamath Falls, Oregon who only took one long trip (to South Dakota) in it. It's got a funky 195 motor and a three on the tree manual transmission. It has one bad bondo repair on a the drivers door, but otherwise is really clean. Can't wait to get that sucker out here. It will live in the Carriage House in back of our Victorian (#3 on your list), surrounded by all walls covered by ham radio license plates.

Again, nice couple of rides you have there.

Thanks... The pics make them look lots better than they are. Both are hangar queens, and need much attention (funding is the hold up). However, both units are complete, solid, and 100% original. The '66 has the 326, 2bbl with a 2 speed "powerglide" transmission. It's main problem is since it's 46 years old and a converdible, the frame has sagged in the middle making the doors hard to close. I found that car sitting in a corn field 21 years ago and bought it for $200 bucks.
It was originally a graduation present for a kid who was killed in Vietnam... It sat in said field, until the boys dad could let it go. A battery, some gas, and a new fuel line was all it took to drive it home...

The Tornado was my Grand fathers car, It was his pride and joy. He died about 15 years ago, and Gramma downsized by donating it to me. It's needs are mostly cosmetic, with the usual mechanicals like brakes, tires, tune-up, etc...

The reason I want to ground up restore them is not fore monetary value, neither car is all that rare or worth much... Rather, I'd like to preserve them in memory of two very great people, one who I never knew, and one who I miss dearly...

Cob, cobb or clom (in Wales) is a building material (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Building_material) consisting of clay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clay), sand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sand), straw (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw), water, and earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soil), similar to adobe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe). Cob is fireproof, resistant to seismic activity,[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cob_(material)#cite_note-2) and inexpensive. It can be used to create artistic, sculptural forms and has been revived in recent years by the natural building (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_building) and sustainability (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainability) movements.

Interesting, but most likely not for me. I prefer more traditional home and building styles (Victorian, Colonial, Cape Cod, Ranch, Queen Anne, Tudor, etc.) and traditional materials, i.e. wood frame * plaster, brick, stone, or masonry. It looks like the cob homes are best suited to rural/country living which is another strike for me, I prefer more urban or suburban dwelling. Nonetheless, to each his or her own. Everyone has their own preferences and I wish you the best of luck in acquiring or building a cob home. As for me I just learned something new.

Well, I never would have considered it either, but... I've lived in a log home. That was cool. I helped build it, in fact. My parents built it when I was still a teen. The contractors took the last payment and ran, so we ended up finishing it ourselves. My father learned from that by the way. Now he'll never pay a contractor the last payment until the job is done. Anyway, that was cool and I liked the house. But I always wanted to live in a big old Victorian. I have, for the last almost 4 years. It's beautiful, it's big, it's kinda creepy at times, which I like, and I love all things Victorian, so I feel right at home. But the upkeep is insane, as are the utility bills. The last four years have given me more and more of a desire to scale down, live simply and with as little "consuming" as I possibly can.

I also love old apartment buildings... And yes, I do understand the issues with upkeep, bills and all that. One of the major killers in this area is property taxes... they are through the roof (no pun intended). I live in a colonial that recently had to be renovated. Replaced the roof, water damaged wood in the walls that resulted from leaking gutters and a hole in the roof that we didn't know about until, well,, the water started flowing inside when it rained. We also replaced damaged siding, painted the entire exterior, put in some new windows, new gas furnace/boiler system, etc.

Well, if you do build a cob home please let us know how it goes. It does sound interesting. I was looking around on line and I read that some people equip them with a thing called a "rocket heater" to keep it warm. It looks like its actually built into the house itself. Smart idea....

Sounds like it could be an ideal construction technique for this area, then. The climate is warm and dry, so those thick walls would be an advantage as long as they can hold up to the occasional shaking.

On edit: Did a bit of research, seems that cob can indeed hold up to earthquakes but only if the building is designed properly. No narrow pillars between large window areas, for one thing, and a concrete or wooden bond beam around the top of the wall to help hold things together. This is pretty much the same as what's used in modern adobe construction.

It's basically the same thing (Cob and adobe), the only difference being the mass. The binder (Mud with some portland) is the same.

I've lived in a dome. They are nice in that the round shape makes seem much larger inside than they actually are. The only problem with them is that it's very hard to waterproof all those seams so they have a tendency to leak whenever it rains.

You must have gone with a modular, i heard that too and took it into consideration.

Monolithic builds the Shotcrete/rebar/foam spray dome by spraying layers over an inflatable airform that stays part of the structure. They build all their domes in this manner...from the tiny 10 footers up to huge grain and liquid storage domes. Strong as hell and never leak. Harder to build and more expensive than a modular dome, but the cost will make up for itself after a couple of years, unlike my current stick box that most of us live in.

Yeah, the one I lived in was built up out of 2x6 fir and plywood pentagons that were built on-site then fastened together somehow.* It sounds like the domes you are looking at should take care of the leakage problem nicely. When it wasn't raining (this was in Oregon, so that's maybe three months out of the year max), I really enjoyed the nice, airy feeling inside the dome. It was a smallish, single room dome but the ceiling was close to twenty feet above my head and there's something pleasing about living in a space with no 90° corners.

*I didn't build it, I just lived in it for a year

We were looking at those because of how easy it is to buy and build. One big crate and all of the things you need are in there...just a couple of friends to help and you have a house! Not a bad idea for what would be considered slightly above basic shelter. It would be a lot of work to properly seal it up, however, as you found out first hand. The airform/shotcrete and foam lining really seals you in there...the other thing is soundproof. But you really have to research the area you want to build in since many HOA's wont go for that. A few acres off the beaten path, some solar panels and a windmill or two and you are good to go! Of course, i want to be able to run some basic utilities out to the property while we have the option, we just wont be using as much as we do now...by a long shot.

Thats cool. But in my world, those are absolutely terrible and impractical reasons to not go with a clearly superior dwelling. I couldnt give two shits about what my neighbors think of my house as 1) I dont plan on having many neighbors where we are going, and 2) if they dont like it, they can fuck off.

I understand and I respect everyones personal choice.. But in my case it's a matter of personal preference and not what the neighbors want. I just simply prefer the kinds of styles that I grew up with and lived with all my life. The cob and adobe stuff would make me feel like I am living in a piece of pottery in the enchanted forest. But that is just me. But most certainly, you build and live in whatever type of home you prefer. After all, personal choice is what matters.

It's kind of like many years ago when I was 16 and was sporting long hair some person asked me if I feel that all young people should wear long hair. I said, they should wear whatever they like. If they prefer long hair, wear it long. If they prefer to wear it short then by all means, keep it short.

Not too much on my bucket list. I've had my share of excitement over the years. I'd like to spend some time alone on a tropical island with a few supplies and a HF rig. Wouldn't mind rolling on another fire call. I'd like to hike at least part of the Appalachian Trail and the Ice Age Trail. I'd like to party like it's 1999 with the Swedish Bikini Team. I'd like to move out of the city that I'm in and get just a little more rural. Some of these things have a greater probability of happening than others.

Sounds great. When I was in HS I was torn between 4 different directions. I wanted to either go on through college and get a degree which (but I was not thrilled with the idea of ending up behind a desk), joining the FDNY, or, joining the Yonkers Fire dept, or joining the MTA / NYC Subway's and working my way up to a motorman. After my parents hollared at me I went to college figuring I could always apply for the fire dept or transit afterwards. But when I finished college I went to grad school and wound up as a teaching assistant and then ended up getting placement in a decent paying job. Overall, I am happy with the way things went but I know I would have also been happy had I gotten in with the the fire dept.

Ah well, I guess we can only be in so many places at once. In any event I am glad things worked out as you wished.
