Camera Question

I am looking for a camera for the wife as a Christmas present. I had asked in another thread and got some advice but I missed the special I was looking at. I have the Canon 1000D. It will not take movies and is strictly a still photo camera. But it is excellent. Canon does great work on their cameras. The battery is rechargeable and lasts all day at taking pictures.

I recommend Canon.

I might be inclined to go with the T3i and skip the "kit" stuff for the same price:

What's the budget? DSLR? Big telephoto point and shoot? Regular P&S? Desired features?
Battery life is important to me when considering any camera with a rechargeable batt.
Either Nikon or Canon will be good and should last a good while.

Budget is in the 600 dollar range. Prefer DSLR. Would like a larger zoom to go along.
I have been looking at the Canon T3 but how much better is the T3i? I know its a difference between 12 and 18 megapixels but at that size how much better are the pictures?

The T3i is a little better than the T3 in a number of areas -- higher resolution, shoots full HD video, bigger LCD screen.

Better pictures? Not much of a megapixel whore here -- better pictures have more to do with the photographer than the camera most times (fine cookware rarely creates a chef). They're all pretty good these days.

In the Nikon/Canon/Fuji/Pentax, etc. wars, I'm an advocate of trying 'em and going with what works best for you. I find Canon DSLR's to be awkward to use, but other folks say the same thing about Nikon. Couple weeks with either and it's no big deal. You really can almost shop for deals at this level -- they're all good.

She has an HD camcorder so video is not the most important...

Fuji has a couple mirrorless cameras ($$$$), but no current DSLRs.

If a bridge cam is okay, I'd look at the Canon SX50 HS. It's getting good reviews and has a 50x lens (think: telescope).

Considering the budget you'll either have to give up that super zoom or go with a fixed lens camera with a super zoom. The standard for most DSLRs is an 18 to 55mm lens. You can pick up a fixed lens Canon or Nikon with a 120x zoom for less than your budget.

Thanks for all the advice. I ended up Going with a used Canon with lenses and some accessories. Its an older camera but all of the reviews I have seen are excellent......
