The USS Enterprise has returned to port for the last time under her own power. This is one destined never to be a museum ship. The removal of the eight reactors will leave her structurally unsound.

I've been aboard that ship several times. It's really, really large.

It's too bad. All those years flying through deep space, boldly going where no man has ever gone before and now the enterprise may not even have a place as a historical museum piece ? I hope they do give appropriate historical recognition to Captain Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Bones, Soo Loo, Uhura, Anton Chekhov, and the entire Enterprise crew.

Now John, Had you followed the link you would know that this is CVN-65, not NCC-1701

Just noticed that the replacement for the Enterprise is going to be a carrier of the "Gerald R. Ford" class. WTF is that? A CVN that trips over it's own screws??

You know, they never did say what happened to NCC-1701A. The ship was to be decommissioned at the end of "Undiscovered Country" (aka "The Quadrant's Alive With The Sound of Klingons")... but that's all that was said.

Nor do they ever say what happened to NCC-1701B. We know C & D get destroyed, but E is still around (after repairs), in a manner of speaking...

And does nothing worthwhile the whole time it's in service.

NCC-1701B was severely damaged and decommissioned in Star Trek Generations. The same movie that NCC-1701D bites the dust.

They never actually say that (in the movie)... in fact, you'd think that despite the damage, since it was a brand-new ship just commissioned, that the damage could be repaired.

I stand corrected.... I assumed it would be decommissioned after the damage as it was not a new ship but an Excelsior Class Refit when commissioned..

OK All the Star Wars stuff aside..... On a ship this large, do you still feel a bump when you cross the Equator?

Only if you're a poly wog

Poly Wog? From Urban dictionary:

1. (http://polywog.urbanup.com/1384495)
Polywog
9 up (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Polywog#), 18 down (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Polywog#)

Racist term used interchangeably with ‘nigger’ and ‘nig nog.’ First coined by the imperial British in the 19th centaury, the term lives on, used by redneck morons throughout the Western world.
Mugabe killed Lt. George because he called him a “giant stinking Polywog.”

It was an Excelsior Class ship, but new construction, not a refit. (Well, actually it was a CGI display with a handful of real sets for the actors to act in, but whatever)

In "Generations" the Saucer Section crash landed, and the Drive Section was destroyed by a Klingon Bird of Prey. It was unrecoverable.

NCC-1701-B was eventually decommissioned, but not due to the damage by the tendril, since it just took out a part of engineering (TNG: Matter of time).

The producers (ie Rick Berman) needed an excuse for a "new" ship for future movies, one that was designed for viewing on the big screen, not the boobus toobus.

On an only slightly related tangent, one of the reasons that the revamped BSG was so good was that Ron Moore was involved in the production. He, like Berman, was heavily involved in the post-Gene Roddenberry era of Star Trek, specifically the Deep Space Nine spin-off. DS9 doesn't get the credit it should, as it was in many ways a departure from the Roddenberry vision of the future -- but it was also more "real" than TNG or Voyager.

Why? Robin Williams was hilarious and Mindy was HAWT! Mork and Mindy was pleasant relief from Benny Hill.

Yeah, like this:

More "Future-like" :) But nothing like the NCC-1701-J:

Much like "Enterprise", which gets constantly berated. I rank that series as the best of them all, with Cpt. Archer as the perfect mix between Picard and Kirk.

You guys know way too much about Star Trek for my comfort levels.......Sorry. I first saw Star Trek on NBC starting with the original airings the first season (yeah, I know, I'm turning into an OF); became a full-fledged Trekker in college.

Some things just never leave you, once you learn to grok.
