Thanks for starting this Vets Day thread John.

I honor All Vets, even ones like my 20 year old grandson who served stateside for only one year and was honorably discharged luckily just before he was due to be sent to Iraq.

Here is an interesting article:

"A Cold Shoulder for Cold-War Vets"

Cold-War Vets cannot join the American Legion.

For all those who served: THANK YOU

For the silliness of the Canadian government who legislates which holidays
businesses must close on: :wtf:

I'm stuck up on the frozen tundra of Calgary for an extra day since the
place I'm delivering to was closed today.

they don't mandate business closures
they heard you were arriving in town and decided to close just for the day
hope you enjoy the snow there

Vets are treated a lot better now than they were years ago. Example, the wife and I, both Air Force veterans, were guests of Darden Restaurant Group on Veterans Day. Our server asked if we were veterans, and then presented us with a special menu which included our favorite Olive Garden dishes. The only charge was for beverages and desserts. Needless to say, we tipped our server VERY well. There were more free and reduced offers at restaurants and stores than we could take advantage of, and we didn't want to abuse the privilege anyway.

Such treatment was much appreciated.

Kevin....Remembrance day is a statutory holiday on November 11th originally to honour the fallen Canadian soldiers on the anniversary of the armistice of the great war in 1918......
It's now used to honour all those who have fallen in World War 2,the Korean war,all our U.N. peacekeeping efforts and bloody Afghanistan...it's considered more than a day off in this country..... I hope it was'nt too cold for you in Calgary ;)

Accckk!! .....most of the season is gone now..... if their labour negotiations goes well in the next week or so and both sides in the dispute come to some sort of agreement they say they can salvage some of the season...... I'm not really holding my breath on that one :irked:

Go to the local rink and watch the kids play. Not much fighting, but they do play their hearts out.

Thats just a good idea anyway, it helps the kids playing to have an audience. But if you have even a minor league team, now is the time to go support them...never know, there may be an out-of-work NHL'er on the roster.
