Microchip makes a great microcontroller, but I have been really frustrated with Microchip tools, with their MPLAB IDE not installing (infamous 1935 errors) and USB based programmers that will need to have the drivers reloaded if you allow the computer to go to sleep with the programmer plugged in. Recently, I purchased a PIC24F development tool, that I could not install on my computer. went to another computer, same problem (MPLAB IDE 8.31 included) refused to install on any Windows XP Pro system, even though 8.30 loaded on all but one.

Then there is MPLAB-X, the new IDE, completely rewritten in JAVA.

MPLAB-X installs on everything, fast and easy. Rich with features. And now there is a stand-alone programmer.

If you work with PIC microcontrollers, You should look at MPLAB-X

Microchip also include C-Compilers, C Lite as free versions, and C compilers that will cost money because they are optimized.
