I installed one of THESE (http://www.nest.com/living-with-nest/#meet-the-nest-learning-thermostat) today. I've been thinking about doing it for about a month and finally took the plunge. The wife didn't care for it, until she got home today. She likes it better than I do. The thing, over time, will program itself to match your lifestyle and you can control it from your phone or any smart device. Simple to install (make sure you get the second generation). Customer support is great too.

Anybody else have one?

Neat unit—designed by some former Apple engineers, and it shows. I thought about putting one in myself but they're a little pricey and my heating system so primitive (natural gas wall furnace with no fan; no A/C) that I felt like it would be akin using a cruise missile to weed my lawn.

No John, I think you might have to shovel your own coal... Put a small gas or oil burner on that steam antique and then you stand a chance...

That looks like an interesting little device. Let us know how you like after a few weeks of learning.

What a concept. Something that learns how you operate, instead of the other way around.

I might get a couple if you let me know how it works out for you, Bob. My house has two heat pumps, one for upstairs, another for downstairs.

Pull the cover off your thermostats and check the wires (they have a letter code where they attach) and see if the thing is compatible with your system. Also, make sure you get the second generation NEST(if you have an E wire you will need the 2nd generation). My downstairs unit is not compatible.

So far I am pleased with it. Once you put it online, it starts to keep track of your usage and when it is actually running. They say that it will take about 3 weeks to learn your pattern and after that it will tweak itself.

UPDATE for those that were interested. We get a monthly report about our usage of the heating and cooling system, which is pretty neat. Also, when you change the temperature it will tell you approximately how long it will run to get there. They heave actually helped to lower our power consumption.

Now NEST is coming out with a fire/CO2 detector. This thing communicates with the thermostat if it detects a high CO2 level and shuts it off. I like the thermostat so much, I per-ordered a couple of the detectors. It has a lot of other features, check it out. http://www.nest.com/smoke-co-alarm/life-with-nest-protect/

Just noticed that its been almost one year since the install.
