Ive been trying to improve my skills in this area in hopes that i can get good enough to make a little bit of money doing it one day. I have simplified my gear and the way i carry it to save my back and time....sling bag ($100 Lowepro sling bag i got for $36 from a camera store that was going out of business, along with a cool, airgel neck strap for the camera itself for $10...score!), monopod that doubles as a walking stick/weapon, small tripod that fits inside the bag nicely, filters so i dont need lens caps anymore, microfibre cloth...as well as good hiking shoes and gear so i can get to locations better. I even carry a pointed Kubaton for city shoots. I dont like taking pictures of people, but ill jab one in the pecs and traps if they try to gank my shit. But i digress....

I am really starting to geek out in this field, and i know there are some bad ass photographers on the Island...nothing special here, lets talk gear, share photos, help oneanother...i could sure use it, and would simply enjoy reading or having conversations about it. My website has been transformed into nothing but photography, i have stowed away the pens and paper as art has no place in this dead city, but photographers are still respected. Ok, show off time!

Here are a couple of pics i resized. I am now starting to notice flaws and imperfections in my older shots that i was all proud of that i never noticed before...and frankly, im appalled! These days, I am trying to get bright, exciting and interesting shots with minimal post-editing, next to no cropping, and as little digital noise and over-saturation as i can. I hope to be as good as some of you veterans (Bob '0RT) and would love to hear from you guys...and by all means, post your shots! I would love to see them, it really helps.

I like the stop sign. I'm a sucker for b/w. The second one reminded me I need to water the oleanders today, thanks. There are some places north of me I want to get to soon to get the changing of the leaves. Up around Sedona, there is a place where there are some old shacks and such that should photograph well. Of course, up there, there is all the Red Rock and mountains it's famous for, too. I still haven't had much of a chance to put many miles on my new Nikon, other than the GD kitchen remodel. (still in progress) We are also in the process of shutting down my wife's business which is consuming all my free time, and that that was never free.

I use UV lens protectors and polarizers, too. Although they do protect the lens, I still use lens caps since it's so dusty/dirty out here and the wind is always blowing one way or the other. I don't have a problem losing them because I use those cap keepers that have a little elastic band on one end to go around the lens, and a little sticky goddamnit on the other end that sticks to the outside of the lens cap.

Nice pix Adam, keep on clicking.

A few of mine are in the "Bicycling" thread in the Sports area.

Have to scan some of my severe WX stuff in one of these days. Also need a digital SLR - my film camera is a Pentax K1000 and while it's a durable old cuss the unit isn't capable of the things which a modern Nikon or Canon is.

Funny you should mention that. We have three Pentax ME series cameras with all the lens, auto-winders, and all the goodies, stored in the closet. Although I know I'll never use them again, I just can't seem to part with them. Probably wouldn't get diddly squat for them anyway. Too bad the lens won't work with DSLRs.

Too bad the lens won't work with DSLRs.

You can actually use any older Pentax lens on a Pentax DSLR. If it's the old M42 screw mount, you'll need a K-mount adapter, but it'll work. I've been half thinking of getting a used Pentax DSLR just to use some old glass I have. Pentax glass on a Nikon, though? Ain't happening, sadly.

I used Pentax film gear almost exclusively for many years; still have a couple K2 bodies. Spotmatics? Ohhellyeah! ;) Been slowly selling it all off -- the film bodies (of any brand) sure don't go for much on the used market these days. Some of the older SMC lenses still sell pretty well, though.

I had a sweet deal back when I used those. I was working for a TV station, and they developed film every day because the field crews would turn a few stills. Since is was no more effort or cost, they would process all my slide film at the same for free, but I had to mount them which was fine since all were nor keepers. Hell, they even gave me all the film I wanted. My wife and I shot film like crazy, and still have a bazillion slides packed away. I guess I should transfer them to a digital medium some time. Or maybe I'll just die and they will all get shit canned. Seems to be the way of the world any more.

kf0rt
10-23-2012, 08:24 PM
That is a sweet deal! Growing up, my Dad had a darkroom, so processing was "free," just had to do the work. Still has it, but it hasn't been used in eons (if anyone wants a good deal on a Beseler 23 Dichro enlarger with all the goodies...) I'm soooo done with shooting film. One of my big side projects is converting years and years of film to digital -- royal PITA, that.

The unfortunate thing is that a lot of the spectacular professional work is shot in RAW format and heavily post processed. A new thing is HDR--which just a bit of can give incredible pop--but the trend is to heavily apply it and get a surreal gamma across the exposure. Gets tiring after a bit... Remember though that the difference between an average photo and an incredible one is a two parter. Henri Cartier-Bresson aptly stated that it's in the moment--and Ansel Adams correctly showed us the power of the light. Moment and light.

I still prefer working in traditional film. Got to get my darkroom back up and running here at the new house. There is a little fun to be had with digital--but the outcomes seem contrived. Here is a smattering of some of my work--the site has not been updated in over two years...

I have to admit, i tried shooting a wedding and a walk down the strip...only got about 3-5 useable shots from those because the subject matter didnt interest me as much, so my eye wasnt tuning into it. This is something i need to fix if i want to do anything with this. I have a rehearsal tomorrow at 1pm, just one 45 minute set for our new singer. But when its done, i am all loaded up and ready to hit the road with a few good hours of sunlight. Ill try to nail down some more shots.

I hava Canon 120is Powershot I carry around on my belt in a carrier 24/7. I don't like the Piss Poor Cellphone cameras. The Canon has a 10X zoom lens and also functions as a decent camcorder. The Flash is pretty good too. So since I have this on me all the time, it is easy to WHIP IT OUT and shoot what I see. I take lotsa pix of the cats, and whatever project I am working on. But, if I am out and a PHOTO OP emerges, I am always ready. Oh yes, also carry spare batteries along in my tool pouch. If U visit the "other" forum, U will see the various travelogues I do on trips I get to go on. Dayton, San Francisco, Taiwan, Santa Clara. Wherever I go, the Camera documents every bit of it. U can also view my FLICKR site to see all the pix.

Sometimes one has to be novel in how to do this--once upon a time in the photo rags (remember those?) lots of plans and tips were to be had on turning the bathroom into a darkroom for a dev and print session. When we first moved to Kentucky, I set up in a tiny bathroom--with a Laborator 1200 in the corner. Hard to hide that...

Hotel bathrooms were always my favorite. :irked: This was often necessary when doing large format to make sure that the day's work was in order and nothing needed a reshoot. If you have the right stuff, LOC archival work can come out the the bathroom. Here is an example where all the negs were processed at the hotel;

http://www.loc.gov/pictures/search/?q=thrush&co=hh

There are 3-4 more projects currently headed to HABS. The NPS takes YEARS to complete measured drawing sets. I shot this series in 2004 and it only appeared last year!

I put this site up when we moved to a bigger house in 2004. The darkroom shared half of the space with the bench and later ham station. My office was shoved in there as well...

http://timescapeconsulting.com/newdark/

In the new house here, the shack will share the space with the darkroom also. Don't know when that will happen--the sink is in, a Drainosaur installed for discharge--but the electronics end is taking a lead!

In the new house here, the shack will share the space with the darkroom also. Don't know when that will happen--the sink is in, a Drainosaur installed for discharge--but the electronics end is taking a lead!

I really do like the b/w pix. Nice job

Got my mitts on three boxes of my grandfathers slides earlier this year (he died in 1985, born in 1897). Here's a couple shots he took in May 1937 on a trip to Glacier National Park. Early Kodachrome film, camera unknown. On some, the color has held up well -- others, not so much.

Yeah, if you don't mind spending a little $$$, Lightroom is probably the way to go. Full version is $114 at Newegg right now, but like Eddie says, there are deals from time to time. There is still some stuff that Lightroom can't handle, though. HDR, panoramas, focus stacking... the "fringe" stuff. And Lightroom may be a little "heavy" if you just want to edit pictures once in awhile. It's more of a "digital asset manager" with a good editor. Perfect for most of what I do and I use it a LOT...

ETA: Lightroom also uses Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) for full RAW file support. That's pretty much the standard in the pro world.

Here's a shot from the same seats, looking at Steve Pearce, who... dare I say it?... who is on first, in the top of the first (1:37 PM). This gives you a better idea of what the stands looked like for the bulk of the game.

ETA:

Nice work, Charles. If I think about taking the camera along on the next foggy morning bicycle ride, there's a blue heron hatching area located several miles up the trail - in a swamp which sits in the middle of Akron. Behind it is the old Firestone R&D facility; it's still kept brightly lit. A swamp sporting dead trees - each complete with largish nests - shrouded in fog and all of it backlit by the factory is something off the cover of a good sci-fi novel or out of an equally good acid trip.

I hear you. My heater is broken and it was 29f last night...its simply cold in here! I have a heating guy coming out, but im not sure when they will be here. We've waited a couple of weeks, but its really starting to cool off now, im over it!
