The Austrian daredevil known as "Fearless Felix" will once again try to shatter a few world records today -- with a jump from the edge of space! Felix Baumgartner hopes to try again today for the jump from 120-thousand feet up -- that's about 23 miles.

I saw a photo of all his safety equipment. O2 tank, tracking equipment, gps, orange vest, handhelds on his bat-belt, twinkie light on his helmet. I'd bet he is Rens newest bestest wacker buddy. Where the hell is Ren, I miss him.
Well, they've begun inflating the balloon so it looks like he's really going to go for it.

Reload. The same thing was happening to me, reloading the page fixed it. I had to reload every 20 minutes or so and then I found that switching from Firefox to Chrome completely fixed the problem.
Might be a Windows deal. I'm using Firefox under OS X with no serious problems.

I'm using Linux as usual. I think it's a Firefox thing, at least in my case. It doesn't like live youtube video.
It's been interesting watching the ambient temperature change. I'd like to see the curve plotted on a graph—it was as low as -60°F at one point but now it's back up to a relatively balmy -22°F.

He made it!
Baumgartner now holds the record for the highest manned balloon flight and highest jump. Looks as if he missed out on longest free-fall by a few seconds and the jury is still out on whether or not he exceeded the speed of sound.

That was really cool. Though, did you see the look on his mom's face when he was in free-fall and didn't respond for about 45 seconds? If any of my kids do this sort of thing I'll be a total wreck.

Well, it IS better than the pig.
Of course, I missed the "live" event - was out biking - but got to check out the footage on the Beeb.
Baumgartner went into a flat spin as soon as he got into air that was slightly denser than that at jump altitude and managed to recover when he got into denser air yet. It's a phenomenon which plagues any very high-flying aircraft.
Anyone remember the stabilization mechanism used on Spaceship One? That's the next phase of a near-space high dive: Someone's going to attempt Mach 2 with a wingsuit. May be Felix, in all probability it'll be someone else...but I see it happening if a balloon that can carry a man and a capsule to 150k ft can be built.

That reminds me of a movie I watched with my girls yesterday. It was set in the 1940's in England but in the kitchen of this big old mansion, there was a very modern looking bag of Gold Medal flour and a very modern looking can of Spam, which one of the characters carried across the kitchen. I've noticed that a lot of props in movies lately aren't authentic to the time period, which bugs the crap outta me because I love history and being historically accurate. Was Spam even around in the 1940's?

Well, the can didn't look like that. It was the modern blue and yellow. Same with the bag of flour -- very modern looking. It was kinda funny to see in that old Victorian kitchen, being carted about by women in 1940's dress, complete with bonnets.

It was neat to see that during his short freefall it was determined that Felix did achieve it at the speed of sound.......... to the day that Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in the X-1, 65 years previously....... ! awesome! :agree:

Yes SPAM was around the, and salty as hell. I don't know how anyone can eat that stuff. Maybe if you mix it down with other ingredients. But straight up ?? That stuff will give a person with normal blood pressure a high blood pressure attack.
Yeah, if they are going to do a play or movie do it right. I collect all sorts of old stuff. This place is beginning to look like a throwback to the late 1940's / early 50's. I have all sorts of old paraphernalia.

Give me a little more time. I am looking for an old candlestick phone and/or a vintage 40's/50's style rotary cradle phone. My ham shack is already a throwback to the early 1950's with a few 60's early 70's stuff, like my TEAC reel-to-reel deck.
