So... I am going to tax prep school. Today was the first day and I have three huge volumes of books to learn by mid-December. Fun!

Out of curiosity, where do you prefer to get your taxes done? Vote and explain why in comments.

Thanks!

Untill now my wife did them, now we're going to separate i'm going to use an independent guy, he's knowing all the laws and deductions a lot better as me, and gets out the max from it.

My wife has been using TurboTax for years. Our stuff is very simple, standard deductions, little income, and not a lot of medical/rx. It really isn't worth having ours done as it isn't complicated. She used to do my sons, and my daughters, however last year we had our daughter have hers done because she bought a house, moved from San Diego to Austin, and had multiple incomes in multiple states. For her, the tax stuff for teachers varied so much from state to state because of way different retirement plans and SS contributions. But for us, if we have any major changes like selling the house, hitting the lottery or dying, we'll have someone that knows all the ins-n-outs prepare it for us. She has the business done by an accountant that has done her company stuff for years. This is the last year for the business, so it will get even easier.

I have always done the taxes--personal and business. This year's (2012) filing is a watershed moment--in which we will use a CPA to sort the mess out.

Life has complicated the thing too much. We pay income taxes in two states--New York for me, Massachusetts for the wife. That latter gets real confusing due to the health insurance requirements, claiming joint income for lower tax rate--yuck. We now BOTH have home office expenses and use of home space--under two different income schema's and streams. Then there is the dual travel...

Add to this our current house under a 'family trust' mortgage, a house I sold in Kentucky with a "wraparound" mortgage, and it gets too fucking complicated for me. That's saying a lot, as a major part of my job is monitoring and analyzing the fiduciary performance of programs utilizing millions of dollars of federal funding... Tax code is too fucking complicated.

Good luck Kelli! This could lead to becoming a "financial consultant" for people with more money than sense. Remember, even if they lose their asses--you already got your 10-15%... :cool2:

TurboTax FTW! even with a farm filing, a business filing, several 1099's etc.

with turbo tax now and at one time all by myself. I was taught by my Mom who was a CPA. I am just too cheap to pay someone else even though I know I can deduct the fees from my taxes..

My wife has been using TurboTax for years.

I have always used Tax Cut. The first year I looked at tax software Turbo Tax was having an issue that wasn't expected to be resolved by the time I would have needed it. This was so long ago that I don't even remember exactly what the issue was and their people don't even remember it ever happening. I started with Tax Cut that year (1995) and have stuck with them because it's easier than changing. I will probably stick with them until somebody else comes out with a program that generates, accurately, next week's winning lotto numbers.

I have nothing against Turbo Tax, I love a lot of Intuit software and have used Quicken since DOS version 3.0. It would be easier to import everything from Quicken into Turbo Tax but I really don't have that much to enter anyway.

H&R Block, but the online version -- really a DIY deal, but it remembers last year's numbers and handles the eFile stuff. $29.95. ;)

Iff I'm. not mistaken, there was an issue with state tax tables being wrong.. It was fixed i time, at least for us since my wife waits till the last possible moment.

I keep mine in my mattress and don't tell anybody about it. Oh, wait, no, I didn't say that!

We use a local CPA who's home/office is just down the road from us. He's been doing our tax return for 11 years and his fee is still the same as it was 11 years ago.

We've used TaxAct for the last few years.

This year is going to be a challenge as we have income from three states, CA, NV and Illinois.

Good times!

I honestly don't remember exactly what it was. I do believe it was on the federal level. At that time my only taxes were for income earned in Wyoming where we don't have a state income tax. Of course at that time it would have been possible that I only heard there was a problem and didn't look very far into it before just going the other way. I was a bit younger back then and had a tendency to do things that way at times.
