I had a lot of problems running older programs on Windows 7, and on some systems running XP. Couldn't be the operating system, could it? This problem has been plaguing me for the past two years, now I know what the common denominator is, and how to run these programs under Windows 7.

Tonight, as I was looking at the BIOS options in my new system, I saw this new configuration item - number of processors, with options: 1, 2, 3, and ALL.

Long story short, when Processors was selected to <1> or <2>, the programs ran properly on both Windows XP/Win 7. With options <3> and <ALL>, the program crashed and burned.

My motherboard BIOS has this option. This is why the programs ran fine on single and dual core processors with Windows XP/Win 7 just fine, but choked on higher processors.

Before you buy a system, get the user manual, and check to see number of processors is a selectable option.
