My XYL wants to know about a couple of PC programs a friend of hers recommended..

One is called CC Cleaner and the other Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro...As I am ignorant regarding computers I thought I would ask the Oracles here...

I use CC Cleaner to get rid of a lot of junk, switched off Java and have Micrrosoft essentials running.
Updating daily, latest patches etc and advanced system care on.

Both are good, but neither takes the place of a good anti-virus program. There are some good ones out there, even a couple that are free like Avast and AVG. I would advise NOT downloading from CNet but going to ZDNet (http://www.zdnet.com/) instead. I've gotten 9 programs in the last few months from CNet and 8 of them had viruses (virii?).

I run both of them on several computers , seem to work good and do what they claim.
I'll second John's statement about "CNET", have gotten bug's there ,, not a good place.

CCleaner.exe Available Here (http://dw.com.com/redir?edId=3&siteId=4&oId=1770-20_4-0&ontId=20_4&spi=1a95909b6e5ea08e44ce1d02fed2dc13&lop=link&tag=tdw_dltext&ltype=dl_dlnow&pid=12739896&mfgId=6300943&merId=6300943&pguid=UHAVrgoOYI0AAF5DQ60AAAEG&ttag=tdw_dltext;1&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.cnet.com%2F3001-18512_4-10315544.html%3Fspi%3D1a95909b6e5ea08e44ce1d02fed2 dc13) is an excellent utility. Never had any issues downloading popular software from CNet in many years.

Malwarebytes is also excellent software, but unless you want the "online" resident protection, the freeware version is sufficient. It includes the scanning and removal utilities plus a few others. No need to buy the 'pro' version if you have good anti-virus software.

I run Norton 360 along with CC Cleaner...virus and malware free so far. No problems in general.

Norton is junk, imho. Though CCleaner is an excellent utility. And as Luke said, I don't think I'd spend money on Malwarebytes, just get the free addition for now.

Also UltraDefrag is another good way to speed things up - http://ultradefrag.sourceforge.net/en/index.html

Why the hell is everyone downloading Piriform software from everywhere but Piriform? :lame:

Go here and get it from the developer:

http://www.piriform.com/

Same thing with Malwarebytes:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

CNet? WTF--the 90s are over with...

Piriform offers a couple other nice pieces as well. Defraggler beats the pants off the MS integrated offering--and Recuva has saved files that were inadvertently deleted--or the result of a corrupt USB stick. CCleaner has a lot of great tricks. You can turn obnoxious shit off (without incurring the nagging MS message at every bootup that the .ini has changed), simply delete items, and it does a fine job on the registry and temp files for an amazing range of apps. I donate to them annually.

Malwarebytes is a major line of defense and "fix" once something boogery gets on your system. Don't wait to download it until your system is compromised--a lot of buggies will prevent you from doing that...

I pay for the active MB version (lifetime license). It runs along with Avira (I pay for that too) and has kept everything away for the past year. My suggestion is the active version.

Be willing to pay or donate for what you use and provides great utility. Coders and developers work hard to make this stuff--it would not be around very long if everyone was a parasitic bottomfeeding freerider...:cool2:

P.S. Norton/Symantec, outside of their corporate virus solutions--is a bloated, kludged together piece of shit that does as much to choke a computer as to protect it. Run away, as there are better and more lightweight solutions that do a much finer job of heuristic protection without sucking down huge amounts of system resources and consuming CPU with shoddy scanning methods.

"...it would not be around very long if everyone was a parasitic bottomfeeding freerider."
Down here they all float.

Getting to the point, so far the best non bloated combination I have found is Microsoft Security Essentials memory resident and on demand with CCleaner run at start-up and Malwarebytes on demand only. Never run two memory resident AV programs to avoid conflicts. CCleaner has the best option for cleaning leftovers out of the registry I've seen and it has a backup feature just in case. The LAST thing you need is a registry error, that's the computer version of a heart attack.

AE1PT has already commented on other bits for me so no sense being redundant. I'll make one comment though having been to Bath, when will they ever supply water that doesn't smell like it came out of the sewer? (;->)

My MacBook Pro runs Ubuntu (along with OS X) but I'd be open to trying Fedora. Red Hat was the first Linux distro I ever played with.

My ibook is the fastest/easiest machine for the resources I have ever had. It has half the ass my pc has, and runs 4x faster. Mine is an older 32 bit Intel processor. It takes 48 seconds to boot up from cold dead start. running side by side to my BIL's $2000 64 bit processor with 8 gigs of ram I think, with win7, my old tired, ibook downloads a web page almost twice as fast.

I have very strong philosophical issues against Canonical (Ubuntu). Ubuntu seems like a fine distribution, but Canonical pays absolutely no respect to open source or the people who have put them where they are. They hardly even recognize that they're a Linux distribution -- goto ubuntu.com and and find me the word "Linux" on their main page. It ain't there.. Now with this latest ploy to incorporate Amazon promotion into their desktop is purely over the top. RedHat has stayed true to Linux and F/OSS in general. The only folly RedHat has had in recent memory is cooperating with Microsoft with the UEFI secure boot; which I'm firmly against.

And Mark Shuttleworth is also a bit of a douche. But not in a cool geeky way like Linus and Andrew Morton, and others.. :)

Also.. I've been using RedHat for nearly 16 years.. so I know most of the components inside and out; so I obviously favor rpm/yum/koji/mock, etc. Over whatever silliness Ubuntu is using. ;)

</two_cents>

PS - Fedora's main page mentions Linux 8 times and even links directly to linux.com [Linux Foundation]. They know who and what allows them to create their distribution in such an effective way.

which is why i moved over to fedora. with ubuntu doing the amazon shit with that crappy unity de. it wont be long till they are doing it in kde, xfce, lxde
linux mint is better then ubuntu but with ubuntu doing what they are doing IMO makes it hard to trust any ubuntu derivatives
debian is still good. but dont quite play well with this system for some reason.

only bad thing I can say about redhat is cooperating with microshit with the secure boot crap.

Can't "trust" any Ubuntu derivitives? What, you think they are going to steal your boogers?

Ive heard so many different opinions of the various firewalls...Norton has yet to let me down. McCaffee (sp), Kapersky (sp), and as few others ive tried have been junk. Havent had an issue with Norton yet, been using it for years.

And i only get CC right from the Piriform website.
