Carl's fault. He started a C&H thread...some of my favorite panels (and IMHO, Patterson's best work) were the few 'Tracer Bullet' clips.

Orgasmo and the Masked Magician have had their turn, as have the Drake logo and the warp engine from the Event Horizon - but Calvin has outlasted all of them.

Wow. I wasn't even knowledgeable that such a brand existed. Galois was actually the very young "father" of group theory. Quite a brilliant young man. Shame that he ended up the loser in a pistol duel. But in those times "honour" sometimes meant a fight to the death.

Not much of a story with this one. I saw a book cover that I liked, I adjusted the red, cropped, filled, added my call and state and voila, avatar.

The M83 avatar (just before it) was from the group of the same name. The picture was from a outdoor concert at night in New York's Central Park.

The "Don't Teabag Me" avatar was meant to be the exact opposite of what the Tea "Party" stands for. Opposite colors, opposite facing snake, opposite sentiment.

I tend to change them often enough. Thanks to Warren who gave me my first avatar, the New Haven Comet shield.

I don't change mine very often. Mine displays my attitude of late. To quote a line from Richard Pryor's last line from his often over looked film Which Way is Up?: "If you don't like that, you better shoot me in the ass right now, cause that's that last thing you're ever gonna see of me.......mutha fucka....."

I smoked those cigarettes in college. As well as British ovals and some coffin nails. Enough tar and nicotine to get you high. Legally.

I took up chewing tobacco in college. Started with Skoal dip and then Red Man plug and loose leaf chew/ It was not uncommon to find me studying in the lounge and occasionally (but very discretely) expectorating into a styrofoam coffee cup making it appear as if I was sipping coffee when I was actually spattin out terbacky juice.

When I was in high school I smoked pipes (Borkum riff, Amphora, and Captain Black commercial blends) and later various high end house blends that I would buy in expensive tobacconists shops in Manhattan) and also ceegars When it came to ceegars I usually smoked Garcia Vega "Panatella". or Italian stogies.

Yeah, these days I rarely chew tobacco or smoke pipes. The reason is that every time I would get any kind of irritation or sore in my mouth I would worry that it was oral cancer. So one day I said to myself that if it bothers me that much then why not just quit. So I stopped buying/using tobacco. This was back in the early 90's. These days I'll only touch tobacco on rare occaisions.

Used to love Garcia y Vega. Even had a cuban cigar once. Nothing else compares. During the Christmas season, I'd smoke cherry blend Panatella slims. Most of the time it was Winston's in the winter, Benson & Hedges in the summer (this would keep me from getting jaded on one brand). For a few years it was Dunhills but my favorite was Rothman's from England. Not the Canadian stuff. Of course I fell in love with the only cigarette you couldn't get in the Western Hemisphere...

I believe Arnold's Tobacco Shop in Manhattan used to sell Rothman's. I used to see them there when I came in to buy pipe tobacco. Never tried them though. I have tried Davidoff's a few times. All in all I was never much of a cigarette man. I was mainly about pipes and chewing tobacco. yeah, Garcia y Vega was a pretty good cigar and easily available at most drug stores, luncheonettes, etc. Never tried a Cuban ceegar. Most people who have tell me exactly what you are saying. Few cigars can compare.

Unfortunately Arnold's is no longer in business. I believe they might have an online presence these days, but no more store in Manhattan.

The Padres ownership didn't sabotage the team's last two months of the season, two years running.

Hah! The Padres ownership has sabotaged the team's entire season every year since 1999 (the year after San Diego voters approved financing for a downtown ballpark, but that's merely a coincidence, I'm sure) by refusing to spend the money for decent players. In 2012, the team had the lowest payroll in the National League.

However: the team was just sold to a group of investors that includes the O'Malley family, former owners of the NY/LA Dodgers. Given the historic performance of that club over the years—especially after the move to California—there's reason for hope.

My dear Aunt Ethelyn wrote children's books, mostly about kids age 11 & 12.

Her generosity enabled me (first licensed at age 15) to get on the air

with a homebrew 100 watt xmtr and triple-conversion receiver (both using WWII surplus parts).

In 1968, with technical assistance from my brother W9JDG and I, she wrote Today I am a Ham.

She "borrowed" my callsign for her main character, Eric, a boy, like me, not too athletically inclined.

Over the years, it's been gratifying to receive letters and email from hams

who attribute their introduction to our hobby to her book. :)
