Opened the door last night and I thought I saw a cat about 40 feet away in the brush. When it looked at me, I realized it was definitely NOT a cat. A Virginia Possum if the pics on the internet are right. I wasn't thrilled with it being so close (being a city boy), but the net sez they're not really a problem.

Right now a feral cat has hunted it across the area. Another has decided that he looks pretty tasty and is waiting off to the side...

This is definitely 'the country.'

Dog has eaten 3 possums in the last 6 months. Actually, he just snaps their necks until they are fun no longer.

I shot one last night that was in the process of helping itself to my cats food.

There used to be a possum living behind some boxes, on a shelf, in my garage. He never bothered anything -- just slept all day and went perusing about all night. I sometimes hear him on 3843 kHz.

I see 'em in my back yard all the time--ugly little bastids, but harmless. They are marsupials, BTW, and have more teeth than any other mammal.

Used to get them coming out at night to scarf up the food we put out for the cat on the farm. If you startle them, they'd play dead and you can pick them up.

Which is why that cat better hope he doesn't catch him. I had a dog that cornered one once when I was a kid. It took 30 stitches to close him up.

Chasing them is damn good cardio interval training.

Aw man. Coons are really smart and their claws are nothing to be taken lightly. I feel really bad if they have to be shot.
