Check out stories about WW II firebombings some time. The heat of the fire essentially creates it's own local weather.

Well known phenomena, mosly just lasting 30 seconds or so, this one took a whole lot longer...

A really dramatic demonstration of angular momentum. I guess its sort of like the "wind devils" that are seen in the southwestern deserts. Perfectly calm clear day and then all of a sudden a rotating vortex of air churning up dust, debris. They may last a few seconds, minutes. Very fascinating stuff starts to happen when you create a spinning column of air.
