Is that a P42DC or am I imagining it? So, what happened to the NH Comet avatar?

I made it up, but it is so nice that I'm thinking of saving it until Christmas.

They're designated Genesis. This is the P32AC-DM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GE_Genesis) They pull very well as we had one on the trip up. As you probably know, they've replaced the FL-9, F-10 units that Metro North (as well as Amtrak and ConRail) were using. Amtrak uses similar engines now too.

Still miss the venerable FL-9s though.

Maybe on the Amtrak trains. They run on the same tracks but have WiFi.

After having been told my danglies looked like an elderly rastafarian I decided to take the plunge and buy some of this as previous shaving attempts had only been mildly succesful and I nearly put my back out trying to reach the more difficult bits. Being a bit of a romantic I thought I would do the deed on the missus's birthday as a bit of a treat.
I ordered it well in advance and working in the North sea I considerd myself a bit above some of the characters writing the previous reviews and wrote them off as soft office types...oh my fellow sufferers how wrong I was. I waited until the other half was tucked up in bed and after giving some vague hints about a special surprise I went down to the bathroom. Initially all went well and I applied the gel and stood waiting for something to happen.
I didn't have long to wait. At first there was a gentle warmth which in a matter of seconds was replaced by an intense burning and a feeling I can only describe as like being given a barbed wire wedgie by two people intent on hitting the ceiling with my head. Religion hadn't featured much in my life until that night but I suddenly became willing to convert to any religion to stop the violent burning around the turd tunnel and what seemed like the destruction of the meat and two veg. Struggling to not bite through my bottom lip I tried to wash the gel of in the sink and only succeeded in blocking the plughole with a mat of hair. Through the haze of tears I struggled out of the bathroom across the hall into the kitchen by this time walking was not really possible and I crawled the final yard to the fridge in the hope of some form of cold relief. I yanked the freezer drawer out and found a tub of ice cream, tore the lid of and positioned it under me.
The relief was fantastic but only temporary as it melted fairly quickly and the fiery stabbing soon returned .Due to the shape of the ice cream tub I hadn't managed to give the starfish any treatment and I groped around in the drawer for something else as I was sure my vision was going to fail fairly soon.I grabbed a bag of what I later found out was frozen sprouts and tore it open trying to be quiet as I did so.I took a handful of them and tried in vain to clench some between the cheeks of my arse. This was not doing the trick as some of the gel had found it's way up the chutney channel and it felt like the space shuttle was running it's engines behind me. This was probably and hopefully the only time in my life I was going to wish there was a gay snowman in the kitchen which should give you some idea of the depths I was willing to sink to in order to ease the pain.
The only solution my pain crazed mind could come up with was to gently ease one of the sprouts where no veg had gone before. unfortunately, alerted by the strange grunts coming from the kitchen the other half chose that moment to come and investigate and was greeted by the sight of me, arse in the air, strawberry ice cream dripping from my bell end pushing a sprout up my arse while muttering..." Ooooh that feels good ". Understandably this was a shock to her and she let out a scream and as I hadn't heard her come in it caused an involutary spasm of shock in myself which resulted in the sprout being ejected at quite some speed in her direction. I can understand that having a sprout farted against your leg at 11 at night in the kitchen probably wasn't the special surprise she was expecting and having to explain to the kids the next day what the strange hollow in the ice cream was didn't improve my status...So to sum it up Veet removes hair, dignity and self respect...:)

Number 5 would "fit" the subject better if it was entering a tunnel... :shifty:Funny you should mention that.

The things you remember... back when I was still in HS, I noticed this one day in one of the staff rooms at the Black River & Western (this after dropping my brother off, and talking with a couple of the engineers that I knew)

Imagine a picture of a long freight train, pulled by a classic steam engine, coming out of a tunnel, proceeding around a long, mild curve to the left.
Now imagine this picture being trimmed of all the background scenery, so it's just the train & the track.
Finally, imagine a... risque and somewhat graphic pose from graphic nudie magazine (ala Hustler or High Society), of a gorgeous (and surgically enhanced) young lady leaving, ah, little to the imagination... and that train picture being, shall we say, strategically placed over the magazine photo...

I remember thinking the same thing about these GE diesels and diesel electrics. That's the original scheme for Amtrak's P32s IIRC. The newer ones look a lot like the old Metro North paint job but there are around 4 paint schemes altogether for Amtrak and 3 for Metro North including the throwback NH (New Haven) McGuiness scheme.

Oh yeah, the tunnel scene innuendo, the sleeper, credit roll. That reminds me of trips to NY through Portal (the Hudson tunnel) at track speed with the coach shuddering, rattling and ears popping. I hope the ICE is sealed against ruptured eardrums. Yeah, the FL-7s and coaches with open windows and doors gave me the best ride right behind the locomotive on the LIRR North Shore Line. I love the smell of Diesel and hot journal grease in the morning, smells like railroad. Still nothing beats a cab ride over the Moodna Viaduct at night... EEK!

Feh yourself. Goat is only 7 feet taller and Moodna is 2,450 feet longer so crossing the span in total darkness all around it disappears into the Stygian black beyond the headlight. Did you ever look out the cab window thinking you're on a train to... nothing? Thinking about Tay Bridge on the stormy night of 28 December 1879......

Only once. During a crossing of the Manhattan Bridge on a N train. It was early in the morning and the fog was so thick that it was like being in a glass of milk.

Moodna seems like the kind of place that would be interesting during a whiteout. Interesting enough to avoid. That is also part of the Metro North system (West of Hudson).

Two old friends, Ross Rowland and his baby C&O 614. We first met at the NH&I shops in New Hope, PA where the Grand Dame was undergoing overhaul, I was quite impressed standing next to drivers as tall as I and of course had to give her close inspection. We met again at Hoboken, NJ some years later where she was under steam for the NJT Tri-Transit Expo in Lackawanna Terminal, from miles away the whistle told me something was up and I just HAD to find out. Everything NJT was there, the PCC trolley car and 1947 GM coach, the bus with a stick shift brought back memories of my feckless youth but I digress. Too bad I missed the Port Jervis trip where they turned her around on the long disused turntable... with a bulldozer. The treads dug up the ground but they managed, the pictures were funny. Ross had a dream of hauling the rich at prices only they can afford from Washington to the Greenbreir Resort in Sulfur Springs, WV but CSX won't allow steam and now she sits a yucky shade of green in Clifton Forge, VA with an uncertain future. <sniff> (:-<)

Memo for Mr. Rowland: Check for water in the pool before you dive in.

Yes ..... Ross Rowland ....he attempted to run a tourist railroad operation here on Vancouver Island on the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway which at the time was owned by short rail line operator Rail America ....... it did'nt pan out well at all!

The people who live on Vancouver Island finally booted Rail America (who purchashed the line here from Canadian Pacific) ...... now owned by us...

....but Ross Rowland has long since disappeared

We're hoping for a great future for our rail line!

Good luck, it's always nice to visit a railroad tourist or otherwise.

We've got a few nearby and I plan to visit them in the near future.

Rail America is a holding company with a list of short line assets a mile long. That means CP was the owner of record but RA held the controlling interest. Now to bring you up to date, Genesee & Wyoming gobbled up a long list of short lines and also has operations in Australia, now they bought Rail America and the deal will be final in October. Call G&W today's Empire Builder.

Yes it is. When we were on vacation we used to see the CN Diesels. They'd be heading a train leaving from the Gare Central Terminal under the Queen Elizabeth Hotel (in Montreal). You could see their distinctive engines poking out on to the overpass.

That track behind the engine house goes back at least a half mile, maybe as much as a mile. 1533's tender is back there. As are the ex-Army switchers and Lord knows what else. I don't know why that's all sitting there; possibly there could be some title (ownership) issues, even so...
