Today, I was determined to get access to my tablet so I can download my files to use. I like to have my own organization, and dislike the middle-ware like iTunes. I looked at all kinds of app servers, and so forth, but nothing really worked right, and some of the access demands were a little too much.

I plugged in the USB connector to the laptop, and got nothing.

So I relented to download Samsung Kies software, its equivalent to iTunes. Bad... bloatware, resource hog, took my duo core Pentium laptop to 50% utilization and dragged the system to a crawl. Junk. Had to force the system off to close the program.

I went to the control panel to uninstall, and uninstalled the Samsung Kies program. During the uninstall, it asked if I wanted to unload the Samsung USB drivers - I said no, keep them. Kies is gone. Going on a hunch, I plugged in the Galaxy TAB tablet, and I got the directory structure. Uploaded my music files - works. Music plays on the tablet. When you do plug in the tablet, there will be a dialog box saying something didn't happen. That was the call to the Kies program that is no longer installed. Ignore the message, harmless.

To use the Samsung USB drivers, install Kies, do not run, then uninstall via control panel, and leave the option NOT to uninstall the USB drivers. The tablet will look like a USB drive.

Almost simple, but effective.

Agree about iTunes, Paul. It used to be a slick little piece of software but, shades of the Microsoft approach, Apple's got it doing too many different tasks and it's become bloated, slow and unreliable.

I just stuck a 32 GB MicroSD into this tablet, and it shows up as a second drive folder. Really cool.

Just turning on USB storage mode doesn't do the same? It's worked for every Samsung device I've encounted (Blaze, Fascinate, SII, SIII, etc etc). No need for Kies' drivers unless you are trying to flash a ROM.

I use adb shell, adb push <options>, and adb pull <options> for my Android devices..

It did not for me, Windows XP recognized it as a camera device, and was empty.

With the Samsung USB drivers, I have access to root.

Android, as a media device, is actually pretty good. Once I got used to how to navigate (different than windows), it did what I needed as a media device. It even reads MS Office Doc's, and adobe PDF's. It has an equivalent of Open Office (Polaris Office). Cool.

Having no previous experience with Android, I didn't know what to expect. The only device experience I had was cameras and iPod. In comparing the iPod to the Tab(Android), there are more things I like with Android than iPod.

I have full access, plays multimedia well, and I have access to my Office documents and PDF's.

Polaris Office allows me to edit Microsoft Word Documents. Has Excel compatibility.

Found: Samsung USB drivers for all Samsung devices

Downloaded, scanned and found virus free, both before and after installation. Works great.
