View Full Version : The day is upon us!
Im taking my son to see Yes and Procol Harum in a few hours. These guys are friggin OLD, i figured i better get one more show in before its too late!
Geez, the last time I was at Yes concert was in the '70's!
Thats awesome! I saw them one time in '91, the Union tour, had all the new and old members together. The lineup tonight is Squire, Howe, White, Downes and the new singer, Jon Davison...who sounds just like the old one, only not so "Rocky the Squirrel". Ive been a Yes fan since the mid 70's, and im a youngun!

I'd say the same, if it weren't for the Island. :)

I say Yes to the concert, the way celebrities are leaving us you may not get another chance. Procol Harum; when I read Chaucer's The Miller's Tale the ceiling flew away and my face at first just ghostly turned a whiter shade of pale. (14th century porn has that effect on people.)

True.
I did not pay $9.
But it was a killer show. The new kid is an American and he was the perfect fir. If they had the original guy, hate to say it, but it wouldnt be the same. It would just be a bunch of old guys because the singer is usually what sells it. In the case of Yes, the whole band sells it.
But i must say, Procol Harum simply rocked! They still got it, Garry Brooker sounds the same way he did in 1967...only difference, holy shit, he is a legitimate old man these days, hobbling to his piano stool, handkerchief in hand, telling proper English stories in a gruff, aged voice. He is likely asleep right now. But damned if he didnt pull off a great show!
Big Rick Wakeman fan.
Me too, but Geoff Downes was great!

Big Rick Wakeman fan.
Rock Wankman as I recall...
Was it Rod Stewart or Mick Jagger mouthed this slanderous remark about Rick Wakeman ?
I still have a full collection of Yes from the 70's....I would love to find a source where I could obtain the collection on CD....

I took the kids to Foghat a few years ago before it was too late. Never regretted that. If you don't appreciate the blues, it would suck though.

After a Foghat concert, it would be a slow ride home.
That must have been awesome..............

I live in a college town. We used to have big names come here for concerts.
Allman Brothers, Outlaws, Billy Joel, Buckingham Knicks, Pure Prairie League, and many more. Hell, we had that hot-air balloon festival that is in Arizona or whatever state it's in right now. What a beautiful sight.

I missed Yes, the YL and I had a hard time getting the time off together, and it was expensive.
That's OK, Bonnie Raitt with Mavis Staples opening this Sunday. At Red Rocks. :hyper:
Rick Wakeman, eh? A favorite of mine...

I love to go to the Chicago Blues Fest. It was just too hot this year. Mavis Staples was the headliner there. It broke my heart to miss that.

Oh my YES!!!! <== How do you say that without a pun? Mebbe Oh my FOR SURE!!!
Me too. Caught Yes with Rick Wakman (IMHO, a group without ALL the original players isn't that group at all) on the old ABC "Rock Concert", IIFRC. The one where the sound was broadcast in stereo on a local FM station.
The concert was Journey to the Center of the Earth in '74. And I believe it was narrated by Richard Harris? Do I have that right? THAT, for me, was YES. Especially one of the encore numbers. It was one of the "Wives." Uh-oh...there's gonna be some youtube-in about this!
Standard "rock" concert disclaimer....
On a sour note, that was when "rock concerts" were transitioning from a concert about music and artist rapport with the audience to a show-biz extravaganza where it was ONLY ENTERTAINMENT. The artists had been isolated from their public and the money-grubbing suits were taking over. Sigh.... The image of Eric Clapton in a suit and horn-rims doing "Layla Unplugged" is, for me, very grotesque. To see such a talented musician with fire in his belly tamed so severly is very sad.

Everybody should do the Chicago Blues Fest at least once. Dunno what it's like now, but in '88 it was just incredible. The music, food, beer, crowd, park, skyline view.....so nice.
BUT...for the other side of the blues, the side I like best, there's always Chicago Blues clubs, at least the smaller ones. Fuckin' AWESOME blues playing plus such a great, homey, warm feeling in the audience and from the stage. The decor in the two I've been to was pretty typical "rec-room tacky." (Where "tacky" is used with affection.) Like you're actually in some guy's basement rec room. Such a sweet, warm environment!
Anybody who likes the blues should visit a Chicago Blues club at least once.
And, if the weather is amenable, a dip in Lake Michigan (almost all of Chicago's shoreline is swimmable) is recommended. The refreshment of swimming in that volume of fresh water is complete.

Damn Hippies............... LOL
Damn Long Haired hippies, to you!
Sounds like the Procol Harum show/ Gary Brooker would chit chat with the audience in a very relaxed manner during the breaks, tell dry english jokes and talk about his holiday to Vegas with his wife, then bust into a perfectly played song....it was great!
