What kind of radio pictures would you like to see on a cigar box?
Cigar boxes that would be used for hamshack storage of nic-nacs and such. Now imagine the box with a picture of a radio on it.

Already covered is a Heathkit Mohican, Hammarlund SP-600, National NC-57, Icom Pro3, Yaesu FT-5000, Kenwood TS-590, an old tube, an antique Heil mic, chrome D-104 mic, National NC- Two Seventy, Viking Invader 2000, Kenwood TS-990, one of these: http://vintageradio.com/gallery/plog-content/images/vintage-ham-radio/military-communications-radios/002-13.jpg
and a Heathkit SB-100.

Are you talking about making the cigar box look like a radio? That would be way cool.

No, not that look like a radio. That WOULD be cool if it could be done cheaply. The XYL takes existing cigar boxes of various styles and sizes and puts pictures on them. They get a certain "treatment" to the lids and a functional and decorative box is born. The Harley guys love boxes with Harley stuff on them. Military guys want their branch of service on them. My question to the hams at large, what would be a good radio to use for lid art?

We're going to Shelby in a couple of weeks and while many people like cigar boxes, some are turned off by the cigar logos, as beautiful as those are so, we've been going artsy fartsy with various themes. I'm working on some with my own photos on them.

Do some in Heathkit green with the company logo and radio name/model logos.

Same with Collins, etc. Maybe with the main tuning knob and or S/Meter.

Focus on classics from these companies. Boxes with Knobs 'n Meters.

Meters. Knobs. Lots of knobs.

Here's a rough interpretation of a box in process.

Okay, got it. You should throw Collins and Drake into the mix somewhere. Both have a pretty fanatical following.

Seems way cool to me, Charles. Those are some pretty serious cigar boxes, though. Not exactly Roi Tan cardboard, eh?

Kinda leaning the Pope's way on this (and I'll deny having ever said that). Some hi-rez Drake or Collins stuff would be cool, but the more I think about it, the more I like the picture you posted -- really old gear; military stuff even. Thinking macro, a good closeup shot of a white-hot 4-1000 (or similar) would be pretty cool. Kelli's shot of her impedance thingamabob comes to mind, too. Was just thinking that two of the out-of-the-box wallpaper photos on the Kindle Fire are old-tech. One is a closeup of vacuum tubes and the other is a closeup of a bunch of cassette tapes. Both superbly executed from a photo standpoint, but you know that a lot of research went into their selection. Old shit sells better than new shit quite often. Give the buyer a story to tell...

You could also up the ante a bit and offer personalized boxes for more moolah (I'm somewhat programmed to think this way, so discount my thoughts on this). Callsign added, etc. Think QSL cards, but bigger.

Just my two cents, and I'll be owing you some change. :)

Covered in vintage QSL cards in a design that covers the top. Maybe scatter them out a bit.

I remember seeing an ancient book about radio when I was a kid that had a radio project built into a wooden cigar case. I have always wanted to make one, but never found a decent cigar box. Maybe I should start smoking big fat cigars..

Just had a look online, looks like you can get some really nice ones. My partially built BITX20 project is in need of a case :D

Don't forget "Hammerland" , "Hallicrafters", "Gonset", "Clegg" , and other "GOLDEN OLDIES".

I alway's thought the old "Western Electric" logo was good , know I've seen all of these out on the web at one time or other.
If you do a production run on these "I" at least would like to see pix !

The thing about the boxes is they get stacked up on the shelves, so U can't see the top lid. Only when U take it down can U see it. So the logos should be on the box sides. Unfortunately, that is where someone usually puts a label of what is IN the box (Capacitors, resistors, diodes, etc.). I have HUNDREDS of these boxes, and they are stacked up all over the place. In fact, I look for them out at the swapmeet as I always need more! Homebrewers need LOTSA cigar boxes!

I found a decent Collins logo and thanks for the Drake. I have the Hammarlund and Halicrafters covered. Johnson too.

Pat, you can stack them or stand them up. With such beautiful cover art, WHY would you want to cover them up? They could go on the desk near the operating position to protect the little things from the curious paws of Phobe. Currently working on a coffee table box for general display and storage of those delightful little candies that grandma likes to keep on hand for the little ones.

No, just a regular ham. The rapid response unit would look exactly the same, but would have an orange vest on.

Doing the ham ones for sale at the Shelby hamfest. There will others and untouched ones available too. The XYL likes cigar boxes. I have a few for putting stuff in but she went nuts with them so she figured she'd do something constructive with them.

For Charles or anyone else who wants them:

I drew both of these in Adobe Illustrator format so I can modify them and make them any size you want—big enough to wallpaper your living room if you were so inclined.
