So, I replaced my aging Tracfone a couple months ago with a newer $49.95 model. Old phone worked fine, but for the few times I need to send a text message, it sucked trying to tap it out on the numeric keys. The new one is a Samsung 404G that has the slide-out keyboard. Much better for texting. It also has Bluetooth.

Up till now, my only experience with Bluetooth has been mice and laptops. Easy peasy.

Replaced the stereo in the wife's car this summer with an aftermarket unit and it too has Bluetooth (not part of the purchase decision). Got around to "pairing" these, and it seems to work, but I'm apparently not getting the phonebook on the car stereo. I've got exactly one idea on that -- after pairing, it's gotta be "authorized" too? Without that, the stereo only seems good for receiving calls.

Anyway, in a fit of productivity avoidance this afternoon, I paired the phone with my Win 7 laptop. Apparently, this allows the use of the laptop as a speakerphone and I can transfer files between the two. Can now make a phone call from the laptop using the cell phone (like I'll ever have a use for THAT).

Any other cool stuff that can be done with this (keeping in mind that it ain't exactly an iPhone)? Is there a "Bluetooth for Dummies" book?

You can use it to QRM the entire 20m band while sending Winlink e-mail.

Not really. I've been a "fan" of Bluetooth for a while.

Always have to use Google-Foo about specific device issues.

I use stereo Bluetooth headphones, and even have used it to move a little data around.

Got a recommendation for good 'phones?

I could see a use for that, but heard that Bluetooth stereo was kinda iffy in the hifi department.

Winlink.... eh, not so much.

I had a pair of the Razorfish headphones, but I misplaced them somewhere during the move.

Gave up and got a pair of Kinivio headphones. The Razorfish fit a little better, and had some DSP settings that worked pretty well, especially for boosting the bass a bit. The new ones sound better, mostly due to a more pronounced ear cup. No DSP on these. Both have microphones for calls, the Kinivio is clearer for the other side. Rocketphish was $40 with a coooopin, the Kinivio set was $29.

Neither sound as good as my $70 Sony earbuds, but that doesn't surprise me.

I could buy (and lose) 3 Mp3 / Mp4 players for seventy Sony Bucks.

I heard that Sony uses Angel Hymen to make the transducer in those!

Umm mine are older. I've heard Etonics and such. Better, but there's that price/performance "knee".

Best bass I've heard out of earbuds at that price, at the time. To my ears, of course.

Best thing is, I've had them for over four years, without breaking or losing them. ;)

Speaking of "Bluetooth"
Doe's anyone know of a interface box that I could plug my wired "Earbud's/ mic" into and then pair with the phone ?
Also got the idea some time back that it would be a neat idea to have something like this to interface to the radio (ham) while mobile (let the xyl listen to her music, I'll be able to listen / talk on the rig with out much hassel ) .
Just seems like a good idea.

FWIW, both of the Bluetooth stereo headphones I use have a microphone.

Thanks Dave , but doesn't look like it will be compatable with the FT-857 in the pick up ( will have to do more research) , I can see it working alright with my cell phone (I think) , like I said , more research needed.
