I cant afford to LOOK at an Alembic! I play Fenders because i can afford to look at them, and occasional...with enough work...i can buy one.

I can afford to dream about Ritters, though. This is the world most expensive bass ever made. It should make you feel good about any instrument you own...or feel bad, whichever comes first.

If you make your living by making sounds - and the Alembic line makes the best sounds - it's IMHO worth the investment. Sorta the reason Lance A. and the other pedalphiles (or their sponsors) will fork out an equivalent amount on a handcrafted, ultra light weight carbon-fiber road bike.

Suppose I'm a feelthy rich rock musician ("burnin' down the one-night stands") and can afford any instrument available. How many play Alembics vs Fenders vs Gibsons vs...?

I have 3 Fenders, two of them are $1300, one is $1800...thats a lot of money, but its also a TON of snarling tone! I absolutely LOVE them. But i cant imagine the Alembic sounds anything but amazing! The problem is it would be an extremely expensive relic that would never leave the house. I would never take it onstage in the venue im at 3 nights a week...its outside, often times well over 100F in the summer (plus, they have industrial misters that decend a cloud of thick fog over the crowd to keep them cool...so its heat + millions of droplets of water warping the necks of our guitars and getting into the electronics), and occasionally 20-30F in winter. Four sets a night...wind, rain, snow, the greedy, Chinese owned casino wants us to play. Holy crap, i get shivers thinking of taking one of those really nice Alembics out in that shit...Fenders are basically the F-150 of the bass world. They can handle it.

I also have a Schecter Elite 5 string, its a nice bass for the price, its changed hands many times since i bought it new about 12 years ago, now its back with me. :) And a really nice Carvin fretless 5 string...i think Tim has one too (unless its Trey, forgive me, i forgot who...but i cant imagine thats an unhappy player). And an old Washburn 6-string, but my dumb ass left it in the rehearsal room during a monsoonal downpour, the ceiling caved in and water poured on it all night, thus cracking the fretboard. It affected the sustain and is generally a pisser. I have some really nice 6-string guitars, a couple of customs, but those are for studio or the extremely rare instance that i may be called upon to do a guitar gig. I dont think ive ever owned a Gibson of any kind, its a fine instrument, but i guess one never fell into my grubby paws.

That's me with the Carvin 5 string fretless. Love it, been jamming with Django Reinhardt. Is yours passive/active like mine? I rarely use active mode, but the Carvin R600 combo amp has passive, and active inputs. I wired in a 4x10 cab, that amp rocks....breaks windows LOL! I have and old fender Jazz bass, a mess with dead pick ups, but it was my first bass guitar. 75% of my time is spent making love to 4001 Ricky. BTW Happy Birthday OM!!!

I was thinking it was you, i just didnt want to make the mistake...i know Trey has a lot of instruments too. Yes, mine is passive/active. I hate 9v batteries, absolute junk...so a bass must sound great in passive mode before i buy it. As for window breaking amps, my old system was an 8x10 SVT, a 2x15 SVT and an SVT 4PRO, 1600w head running to a bass wah and bass overdrive pedal. I have scaled back considerably due to not wanting to lug that shit to gigs. At first, i scaled back by selling the 2x15, but it was still too much shit. Then i sold the 8x10 and got a Mesa 1x15 cabinet, but the power flucuation at my main gig ate up the tubes and the stage claimed another victim. So i have that stuff dowsnstairs. Then i bought a GK solid state head and 4x10 for a punchier tone to make up for the loss of tube amplification. Still more shit than i wanted to haul through a casino for sub gigs and corporates. Now, i run a tiny Markbass 400w combo, strap it to a small folding baggage cart and i can go anywhere...i also dumped all the pedals (except the tuner, of course), and got a power conditioner that gives me an accurate reading of the power in and power out...if anything, it tells me how fucked up the power feed to the venue really is. Bought a big tupperware container and i keep all my stage accessories and in-ear syestem in there, bought a dual instrument backpack case and i can roll through airports and clubs with the speed of regular walking without killing my back...i never use my big heavy duty cart anymore.

Age brings more pains, but it balances out with experience. I can haul that setup all day long and feel great. I have yet to figure out how to get large groups of drunk meatheads out of my way when i have to get to work.

Four days off and i managed to get a couple of burgers, bought a kitten, bought a book about Greek resort islands, picked up another kitten to keep an eye on while the owner is serving in Afghanistan, had lobster at Joes crab shack (THAT was the party), hung out with my son and went to see Surf: The Musical. Thats how i get down!

Speaking of birthdays, I was gonna see YES for my birthday, but the decent tickets were over $150 each! Foshizzle, too much cashizzle!

My wife and i had seats right in the front corner of center stage next to the pier extension...so i was basically looking up skirts all night. It was the music of the Beach Boys. I have to say, Brian Wilson knows how to write a song....oh, and that Rush nutter, Mike Love, too. We thought the show was ok, kinda cheese. It was like a high school play based on Grease and West Side Story with surf music...but with top level stage performers and actors. Adrian Zmed is a friend of ours and we got our passes from him as he is in the cast, but i dont think the show would have even been on our radar if it werent for him. We had a good time, though, and the entire cast was great!

I have my tickets to YES right here in front of me! :) I am taking my son because i felt that he needs to have experiences that may not come around a second time...those guys are fucking old! Plus, he gets to see Procol Harum, probably wont get that chance again either. Ive introduced him to Pete Rose, Jerry Maren (the green munchkin from the Wizard of Oz, who handed the lollipop to Dorothy...also dead now), Geoff Emrick (was the engineer on Sgt Pepper), and a bunch of other people whenever i get the chance. I figure these experiences may be cool to him one day. Im totally looking forward to this show just for myself since ive been a YES fan since the mid 70's. The new singer kid is great!

Perhaps he is dead but the Tropicana had an android built in his likeness in order to continue his show? A lot of people do attend, after all, and it would be a shame to lose that revenue stream. And it wouldn't take a very sophisticated machine to replicate Newton.
