I have had mixed luck with Harbor Freight products. The best thing I have bought was an air compressor.

Yeah, you kinda have to "shop wisely" there. Lots of good far-eastern deals though.

Well, as I said to my neighbor, while looking over a Craftsman lawn mower (That used the cable housing, and not the cable to engage the safety lock out): "Well, K-Mart did buy Craftsman out..."

I have a 6 horsepower gasoline engine I bought from HF 2 years ago still brand new , unopened and in the box. I originally bought it to replace the motor on my snowthrower because I thought my engine was permanently seized. But I managed to get it to turn and its been fine ever since and I never returned the new motor I bought from harbour freight.

So, what to do with a brand new 6 hp motor still in the box. I can...

1) Build a go-kart.
2) Find an old mini-bike frame and mount it on there.
3) Build an emergency generator.

I am thinking of option 3, building a generator. But, Harbour Freight usually has good prices on generators + motor all ready to go so I might be better off buying one ready to go.

Incidentally it's a Chinese made motor but it has some excellent reviews.

If I need a special tool for a one time job, I go there. Most of the stuff is good for a few uses, plus, I always, always, always, go online and print one of their 20% coupons good for one item. It's usable about 99% of the time on most any item.

My HF 4" angle grinder (the orange one, not the blue one) works great, the fact that it sounds like it has a handful of BBs in the motor housing not withstanding. Ditto on their top-end combo wrenches. Watch out for their impact sockets, though. Their 20' telescoping aluminum flagpole is good for portable wire antenna support on Field Day.

I've got the blue one. The reason they're so noisy, is they use square bearings in them.

Here's a useful forum—Harbor Freight tools that don't suck (http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/parts-repairs/114176-harbor-freight-tools-dont-suck.html).

Some of their hand tools I've seen are not so great.

I think that's the whole thing with their stuff, not expecting much, and being surprised when it lasts awhile. I always have a POS grinder, drill, and circular saw around for those occasional shit jobs where you don't want to FU the good stuff, and the crap ones either come from HF or yard sales. I sure don't expect much from their tap and die sets, but for cleaning up some threads they are okay. Consumables like their cut off wheels and grinder discs, tarps, small wheels and tires, and stuff like that seem to be on par with most others as far as life expectancy, but the cost is most generally a lot less. But then, I sure as hell wouldn't buy a bunch of their woodworking equipment to build fine furniture or cabinets.

Just for the hell of it, I bought a couple 3/8 drive socket sets from them for about $10 per set. They were worth about $5 per set.

Something else I discovered a few years ago, is that HF will honor their online prices in the stores. Just print off the item and take it in. I've saved a fair amount of $$ over the years doing that, and using a 20% off one item coupon every time I go there.
