Meh. Hoarding an FT-897? What for?

Where's the pile of Heathkit Lunchboxes, or even better... old Ten Tecs? :stirpot:

RCL is going to upgrade as well and he was asking me about ten tec yesterday. My knowledge is rather limited by the way of older ten tec gear.

Anyone got time for a round of PMs about ten tec gear comparisons?

Omni VI/Opt or Omni VI+...about as good at it gets for its generation for use on SSB/CW. Data modes which require a bit more stability? Either install a TCXO and tighter-tolerance BFO crystals then realign rig (~$150) or buy a Paragon II. I don't really notice this "higher phase noise" everyone talks about when comparing a P-II to an Omni, and your computer sound card or TNC darn sure isn't going to notice, either.

FWIW, my first P-II is around 100hz low in frequency, and when I get done modding the Omni I'm going to schedule some bench time for it and the other one I just bought.
